This morning the birds were really making a racket. when I looked outside to see what was going on, there were several different breeds all bunched up and squawking? Then I saw this:

A water moccasin, great. Here he is headed for the porch.

I wanted to catch him, stick him in a can and release him at the creek a mile away. But he was really aggressive. He finally turned away and tried to go in a crawl space vent so I gave up and killed him, something I really prefer to not do. He was a little over three feet.

I'd consider this good news as much as I hate snakes, but that looks like a water snake. I used to see mocs a lot in SC and they always had a semi banded pattern.

I am going to feel really bad if this was not a cotton mouth. I spent about ten minutes trying to catch him before he went into the bushes. He struck at me many times while I was trying to hook him. Does a watersnake have half inch fore fangs? We get black snakes and have a python, they do not behave like this snake did.

Was its mouth white?

We had a pair of snakes in our princess tree next to our garage today. We sat in our camping chairs reading to see if they'd come down, but they never did.

Oh yes, it had a white mouth. That was one of the determining factors as to what it was. I really did want to let it go. I was within two feet of it for a while, trying to get him up so I could move him.

Do you have higher resolution pix? I can't see enough detail, but it sure looks like a water snake to me. I see no pattern on that snake. One easy way to tell is by the pupil...or throw it in the water then watch it swim.

Kevin and David, you guys have got to teach me how to use this Rebel XTi I bought. I went out shooting yesterday and nothing looks anywhere near as good as the shots you guys have of the snakes.

It's not so much about using a Rebel XTi, it's about using a camera in general. If you really want to learn, the best thing to do is go to www.photo.net, read about the techniques you want to learn, then go out and practice practice practice. That's what I did about 10 years ago, except I was using film instead of digital - much much much more expensive. :x

I'll second photo.net. Great community.

The two biggest things people can do to improve their photos is get closer and compose so that your background is not distracting. With critters like snakes, kids and such, getting eye level really does a lot. I've taken photos with a little point and shoot I carry in my pocket that folks think came from an SLR. Taking photos is a lot like driving regarding the skill and equipment. I still have to supress a chuckle when someone sees a photo and comments n what a good camera I must have.
