I totally agree Bret - so far in my experience working on boats it's not so much about "Throwing money away" as it is "Throwing my time away". Man have I logged a lot of hours working on this thing. It's been really rewarding though!
I have a random question for
any chevy/GM gearheads out there?
The original motor was a 92 GM 262 which had been replaced with a 96 GM 262 Vortec. Do the Vortec heads flow better than whatever was on there in 92? Know what the differences would be between a 92 and 96 specifically?
Reason I ask is ... after pulling my plugs, they are quite white ... not melted, and no flakes, but I expected to see a little tan. I'm wondering if I need to re-jet the carb a little richer to accomodate the better heads on the rebuilt engine.
Once I get the coil replaced I'm going to do some WOT reads of the plugs and see what they look like. (WOT read meaning, run WOT for a minute, shut down immediately (no idling), pull a plug and see what it looks like)
Here's a pic from yesterday, but it included a 10 minutes of 20mph cruising and few minutes idling at the dock:
Am I right? A hair on the lean side? Time to jet up a bit maybe?
