HEY ALL, JUST GOT MY FIRST TASTE OF TRUCK DRIVING, AND I CANT SHIFT A CRASH BOX WORTH THE LEAD IT TAKES TO DRAG IT OUT.. im used to japanese syncro imports,, lining up the tach and thinking about shifting.. what a pain in the ass.. wow.. you come to accept how much technology is able to advance.. anyway, it makes me appreciate equipment, that is hard work, but trucking is insane! eventually, i will conquer it.. but that will take tremendous amount of time, and no i dont like many of my class mates at jcc tech.. some of them i find intresting. but i need my cdl and certificate for work.. to haul and move the equipment and parts... so, i have a major hurdle to climb. and someday ill climb it.. and now ive just climbed it, as of april fourth two thoousand seven i have signed off on the 9 speed truck and the ten speed truck.. and passed my cdl backing test i;m fairly sure, ill look at the results on monday. so now i have my road test and soloing and i'll have it.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those trucks have dog box trannies because the dog style is way stronger than a syncro style. Important when the vehicle pulls twenty times the weight of a passenger car.
You will get the hang of it, after a while you will only use a the clutch to start from a dead stop.

It only took 1 trip around Atlanta on I-285 during rush hour to convince me to stop double clutching. And only about 2 days to get good at clutchless shifting. Of course my old Datsun 510 only had a mear suggestion of syncros.

Pete,

Congratulations!

I sat in an F-750 at the Raleigh Auto Expo a few weeks ago. I thought the 7-speed in that was pretty impressive, but 9 speeds is ... well... 28.6% more gears! No one can ever call you shiftless again.

Good for you Peter. It just takes practice. Next up shifting clutchless and skip shifting.

Art,
9 and 10 speed setups are a 5 speed gearbox with a range selector lever. A 13 speed is the same with a second slider.

BTW I got my Class A license in Indiana where part of the driving test is backing the truck and trailer through a 3 barrel slalom. You also had too parallel park a 48 ft trailer in a 60 ft space. The first time passing rate was not very high at the 10 day school I went to.
