I can say with confidence (and Whitney will back me up) that the Kumho 712 is truly treacherous in snow. On the other hand, the very cheap Kumho 716 M+S is one of the worst dry tires I've ever driven since the Montgomery Ward B78-13s bias-ply tires on the Falcon had in college.

I bought a set of BFG Traction T/A M+S tires to replace the 712s on my old Maxima. They handled decently in the dry and were pretty good in snow and slush. A bit noisier than some tires, but you can always turn up the radio.

You could ping Oscar to see what he would recommend.

+1 for ASX for an all-season. Have 'em on the Passat, so far so good. Haven't tried in the snow. Grip is 2x the continentals we replaced, and they are cheap.

Skip the 711/712s or any other summer tire for a street car. Grip is only marginally better and as Art mentioned, run and hide if you see white stuff.

Glad to hear the warm feelings on the ASX. I bought a set for my Volvo 740 turbo.

Sumitomo fanboi here too. I have the HTR 200's and they are great tires.

Why do the snow comments keeping popping up in tire recommendation threads? It's like commenting on a tire's dry traction in Seattle.

Agreed! basing tire selection on snow traction capabilities here in NC doesn't really make a whole lot of sense. I mean, I suppose if your Whitney and have 17 different vehicles, putting all season on one or two makes sense, but it doesn't make much sense for me. :)

another vote for the ASX, cheap, effective, good ride, decent handling. I've recommended them for a couple friends in similar situations and they've had nothing but good things to say about them

And they are better than the 711/712 IMO, I really didn't much care for the 712's on either my old integra or on my wife's old civic Si. The ASX seems to grip just as well, so even if snow traction doesn't matter, I'd take the all season over the summer only tire if their dry grip is about the same. . .

Whitney's got 17??? I'm only charging him for 11

I drove the 711's in the snow*, no problem with closer to their full tread depth and I'm a bit of a fraidy cat when it comes to a car getting loose on me.

*will note that I had a spare battery and my floor jack in the Miata's trunk...;)

Given it's for a "co-worker" - yeah, I think I'd shy away from the summer "performance" stuff.

I think that for a daily driver that doesn't see a lot of hard driving (or a wife/coworker car) it's nice to have some silicon in the tread for that one day every 2 years or so that some snow falls. Remember the weird refreezing snow/ice last year? I couldn't get out of the parking lot in my 711-shod BMW. I grew up in michigan, trust me I know how to find traction, and it just wasn't happening with those tires. Took my other car with Yoko Avids out later and it was fun.

For the record we only have 6 cars :) 3 have all-seasons (Durango, Passat, and MGB[cheap]) and 3 have summer tires (BMW, Subaru, and Miata). Subaru is the spec snow car, got a spare set of Arctic Alpins on steelies for $30 so I'll be a superhero for the rare snowshower.

Cars are like shoes. One for every occasion.

Cars are like shoes. One for every occasion.[/quote]

I have been pondering this quote, which I do like, but does it relate somewhat to the "Barbie" thread where you made some reference to becoming a lesbian. I am just confused as this quote is somewhat female, kind of a sex and the city thing, and also most people need more that than ONE shoe for every occasion. Just was wondering, I haven't had coffee yet this morning.

Ok, I have a 2002 k1200lt and a 2007 f650, where do I get the supermodel, and does it make a difference that my wife thinks the 650 is her's?
