What's are the good all-purpose, low/mid-cost street tires y'all are buying these days? We haven't bought that type of tire in a while and a co-worker is asking me. They're going on his girlfriend's Altima.

i've had good experiences with sumitomo htr and htr+ tires...had them on three different cars, and they held up well, good in dry and wet and not too expensive

You could call me a Sumitommo fan. I've been buying their tires whenever possible for many years and have been quite happy with all that I've used. Unfortunatley they don't make anything that fits the vette. :-(

I recently purchased a set of Kumho SPT's since they were about the cheapest thing I could find in the size I was looking for. After ~5k miles they have been pretty good.

I've had 3 sets of Kumho's Ecsta 711 tire. Good ride, and wet traction. Best of all, great price.

I like the Sumitomos mentioned as well.

I am on the Sumitomo bandwagon too. Great tire for an awesome price.

+1 for the 711's (not the greatest tread life but they are sticky) although it seems that you can't get them anymore. Tire Rack doesn't appear to stock them and neither did anyone else when I was looking a week or so ago.

I am pretty sure the 711's got replaced by something like the SPT's that Mike mentioned above.

For more normal street driving, Kumho also offers the ASX. I had some and liked them for the most part. Only complaint was they were a little noisy.

I got a set of Dunlop Direzza DZ101's and I like them (maybe 6-7k on them so far). They will probably see some track time this summer. Might be overkill just for street driving though.

We bought a set of Avon M550s from the Tire Rack, based on their recommendation, for Chris' Matrix and we are *very* pleased with them...nice ride and very good in the wet.

Another vote for Kumho ASX's. I'm getting good wear out of them, good in the wet, and passable in the snow on a RWD car. I haven't had the noise issues, however.

They get noisier as the wear down. I liked the set that I had, and would've got another set, but they didn't have the size I needed for my new rims.

On my Mini S, I am currently running Ecsta ASX which is an all season tire my former garage ordered by mistake but I was running cords and getting ready to go to VIR last FEb and didn't want to have my azeni
s as my only option so I put them on anyway (it snowed so It was a wise move) Anyway, I have been very very happy with them. I had 712's before and these are much quieter and handle just fine for the road. I even tracked them one session and they weren't bad.

The Falken ZE-512 is the worst street tire that I've driven on, regardless of what Consumer Reports, um, reports.

Yup. My Ziex 512's lasted about 10k miles on my Volvo. What a piece of crap. - AB

What, 10K miles isn't the normal lifespan of a tire?! :D
