GM never anticipated the demand for the Solstice, it is outselling the Miata.
Same thing happened with the PT cruiser, took Chrysler nearly two years to catch up with the demand. It's not that easy to ramp up production with all the just in time parts and subassemblies from all over the world that need to be ramped up as well. One subcontractor that get's behind can gum up the entire works. I see the weekly shortages list for the Solstice each week, and they are constantly having supply issues with various parts that hold up orders that need those parts. Anyone who is waiting months just to get their order accepted is dealing with a small dealer with a low allotment, they need to go to a larger dealer. Quite a few of the "cancelled" orders are people that went to another dealer that had an earlier allotment available or found one on a dealer's lot, I don't think many were really lost sales that went to another make or model. I even frequently see where a buyer has placed an order with several dealers and then cancels the extras when one gets an acceptance code.
Unless GM drops the dealer's cost there will never be much discounting below MSRP. GM is trying to institute one price no haggle selling at all it's dealerships since it's sucess with trying it with Saturn.

Chuck, I don't get it...I think I've seen *two* Solstices on public roads, outside of dealer lots. Skys too...I just never see them, ever. Miatas are everywhere. What gives?

The Miata had quite a head start. Or are you talking about the Miata NC?

I think he means the NC, but in either case, even in 1990 you'd have seen a ton more Miatas than you have of the Solstice. - AB

I see Sky's all the time and the Saturn dealer "USUALLY" has one on the lot. I have yet to see but 1 Solstice in Greenville and NEVER one on the Pontiac dealers lot.

While the demand for the Solstice (and possibly Sky) might be higher today. Only time will tell if it is a fad or not. The Miata has sold well since 1990. The Solstice has a long way to go to catch up.

Something tells me Mazda isn't just going to roll over and play dead. And even if they did. They've had a 17yr run on that little sports car. That's not too shabby in any bean counters books...

Mazda sold it's 800,000th Miata this past month. GM hopes they can do as well.

Yes, it is outselling the NC Miatas. You don't see many of them either. (altho it's harder to recognize than the Soli) Personally I have yet to see a Sky on the highway. I did see a Redline sitting at the Saturn dealership the other day when we had the Soli in for an alignment. Our dealership has been selling their Solis as fast as they come in they tell us. I hope Mazda doesn't roll over and play dead, I still like the Miata a lot, but the beancounters keep getting in it's way.

From what I have heard, the new Mazdaspeed 2.3T Miata will be quite a step up from the old one. While the 2.3 will be downtuned from the MS6, it will still be in the 240+ range.

But will they give it more tire as well not those stupid 6.5" wide things? Altho I don't know that you could fit much more tire in the wheel wells, Hoosier 225 14s rubbed on my 99.
And will they not do like they did with the MS3 and reduce the boost in 1st and 2nd gear?
Oh yah and will they put the 5 speed back in it?
And will they not stick it with the stupid folding hardtop and 40# of subwoofer in the trunk?
Mazda has found very creative ways to shoot themselves in the foot over the last few years.

Fear not, true believer. Even though underpressurespeedshop.com is down, they used to have a pic of a NC Miata being prepped for SM2 with 18x10s fitted with appropriate Hoosier rains. Yes, they fit.

I think this is pretty common with a lot of the turbo setups. WRX's have lower boost in the 1st couple of gears. - AB

There you go.

A picture of Ron Bauers CSP car with the Enkei 18x9.5 inch wheels with Kuhmo 245/35/18s no fender mods needed to fit that. The 285s will need some clearancing.

Just because its common doesn't mean its a good thing. With my WRX, $140 of mods:

1. Muffler eliminating exhaust pipe from Henry's $80
2. Manual boost controller eliminating the silly first/second gear and high rpm ecu boost reduction $60 (yes I did switch out the boost controller for autocrosses, only took 5 seconds)

My 1/4 mile time went from 14.4 to 13.7!
