This makes for an excellent movie shopping list:

http://imdb.com/chart/top

Just scan the first 100 or so for something you haven't seen, pick a genre, and rent it :) Can't go wrong!

Of the movies I have seen, I pretty much agree with the ranking/placement. The list does have a somewhat techie bent to it, with sci-fi perhaps ranking a little higher than it would for the general public.

The listaccording to the American Film Institute. A lot of other good lists on the site.

Good list, but I would take Apollo 13 and Grand Prix off and add Clockwork Orange, Resivior Dogs, and the Departed for a good top 5.

I just thought of two more that I'd give a 9 score.

For those who like "The Shawshank Redemption" have you ever seen "The Last Castle" with Robert Redford? It's an excellent movie and I recommend you rent it. Also "Sleepers" is another excellent choice IMO.

Also what about "Men of Honor"? U-571 is another good one if you like war history movies.

I am sorry but anything with Pauly Shore has to got to the back of the line.

I think I still have A Clockwork Orange on tape somewhere. Now I just need to fix the VHS machine.

My first two DVD purchases were A Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile.

It just worked out that way. It beats having a thing for Jackass. Next was Auto Focus. How about that for an obscure movie.

Good choice. Vicki and I actually met Terry Gilliam at the premiere of 12 Monkeys. He did a little Q&A session after we watched the movie. Pretty cool.

That's a "Matt Top 10" movie right there. Hilarious. Also the earliest movie I've seen James Earl Jones in.

One of the quotes from here...

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057012/quotes

General Jack D. Ripper: Mandrake, do you realize that in addition to fluoridating water, why, there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk... ice cream. Ice cream, Mandrake, children's ice cream.

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Lord, Jack.

General Jack D. Ripper: You know when fluoridation first began?

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: I... no, no. I don't, Jack.

General Jack D. Ripper: Nineteen hundred and forty-six. Nineteen forty-six, Mandrake. How does that coincide with your post-war Commie conspiracy, huh? It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That's the way your hard-core Commie works.

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Uh, Jack, Jack, listen, tell me, tell me, Jack. When did you first... become... well, develop this theory?

General Jack D. Ripper: Well, I, uh... I... I... first became aware of it, Mandrake, during the physical act of love.

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Hmm.

General Jack D. Ripper: Yes, a uh, a profound sense of fatigue... a feeling of emptiness followed. Luckily I... I was able to interpret these feelings correctly. Loss of essence.

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Hmm.

General Jack D. Ripper: I can assure you it has not recurred, Mandrake. Women uh... women sense my power and they seek the life essence. I, uh... I do not avoid women, Mandrake.

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: No.

General Jack D. Ripper: But I... I do deny them my essence

8)

Here are some of my favorites that were left out

Monty PYthon and the Holy Grail
Life of Brian
Dr. Strangelove
Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid
Any Hitchcock movie
The Hustler
Some Like it Hot
The Godfather
Chinatown and One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest
Taxi Driver and Raging Bull

I thought Departed was good too, but could have been edited better.

The Sting
Star Wars
(Episode IV of course)
Smokey and the Bandit (unedited, of course)

Pretty-much any Cameron Crowe flick (including Vanilla Sky)

Four Rooms is utterly entertaining

I just watched Layer Cake (Daniel Craig, the new Bond guy) and thoroughly enjoyed that as well

Layer Cake is pretty good but really went under the radar.

You might also like The Long Good Friday. It is an older British gangster flick with Bob Hoskins. It was the first time Pierce Brosnan was on film. The original Get Carter with Micheal Caine is also out on DVD now as well as the original Italian Job.
