Having recently purchased a bike, I thought it might be fun to take a ride with some fellow autoxers, rallyxers and track junkies, assuming anyone out there does ride, Whitney stated he was interested. There is probably a few weekend days left for some decent weather. I have no plans at the moment, just phishing to see if there is any interest for a weekend day ride. If there is, great. I'm also thinking a spring trip to ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway or the Tail of the Dragon.

Anyway, let me know if you're interested....

Best polish your roadracing skills and be sure your life insurance is paid up before taking on the dragon! BTDT many times but on 4 wheels.
I swore off riding on only two wheels when mine tried to kill me in 1980!

I can say I've ridden some. 8) Kit rides, Donnie has been known to ride. Goodness knows what Donnie has these days; Kit has a Kawasaki ZRX1200R, I have a Harley FXSTI.

If you're looking for a good group to ride with, various bikes and various paces, the Triangle Denizens of Doom (http://tridod.org, but it's kind of out of date) is a good group. There's enough car enthusiasts among us that you won't be out of place. If you were autocrossing many years back and remember Dick Peterson of Fiat 850 fame, he rides with us too, as does past SARRC Formula Vee champion Paul Newton.

The TriDoD has a Sunday morning breakfast ride. We meet at the Mobil gas station on Airport Blvd south of I-40, with a planned departure time of 9:00. Destination is wherever the spirit moves us. There's no guarantee that Kit or I will be there on any given Sunday, but feel free to tell the folks that I put you up to it. :D

The TriDoD does a Spring Ride every year in the Little Switzerland area, right on the Parkway surrounded by some seriously good roads. There's usually some informal trips to the Willville motorcycle campground and other places during the year too. It's a fun group, diverse in bikes and riding styles. If you like the THSCC social aspect, you'd like the TriDoD.

I've ridden the Dragon several times on all sorts of bikes. It's fun, and you need to ride it, sure, but avoid the weekends at all costs. These days I tend to prefer some of the other backroads, just as good but free of squids and unsympathetic enforcement. On the other hand, the best fried okra I've ever had was at this little place just a bit along from the TN side of Deals Gap...

Um. Yeah. I can prattle on about bikes and riding for hours. I'll stop now.

First time I was ever on a road course was at an event called "TrackDoD", which was a bit of an offshoot of TriDoD that folks like Martyn put on. Basically it was a DE for motorcycles and it happened on VIR south. I've been as fast as 147MPH on a 600cc sportbike on the south straight. I've wheelied an 800cc bike out of Oak Tree. I learned some skills that saved my butt more times than I could count when idiot cagers tried to kill me. (I think I did three TrackDoD's and one other track day at VIR south). I've drug my knee more than a few times doing 60+ in a corner.

But alas, when I had kids I pretty much quit riding. I've since sold all my bikes. I do still maintain my motorcycle endorsement and do still own all my gear (please, people, if you ride then by all means do two things...take the MSF safety course and get good full gear). At some point I'll probably get another bike, but it just isn't for me right *now*. That said, depending on how the TriDoD Spring Ride schedule works with my racing schedule, I'll probably either borrow or buy a bike *just* for that event next year. It's *that* much fun.

There is nothing you can do in a car to match the rush of riding a motorcycle. That perfect autocross run is close, but certainly isn't the equivalent. That said, motorcycling is the cheapest thrill sport around, too. But today's crotch rockets are really just way too stupid fast for the street. It's like if anyone could get an Enzo for $10k, only with less safety gear. But hey, life is short, we might as well enjoy it! :)

Anyway, enough rambling. I hate it when people mention motorcycling. I start looking at pictures of the Buell Ulysses and...

As they say, Dress for the crash, not the ride. With all the modern armor that is available for riders these days, it is very hard to justify not wearing full body armor. There are even several companies making lightweight, vented summer riding suits.

I love motorcycles, but don't have the balls to ride one on the street anymore. As the future Mr. Prez said, kids changed my priorities right now. I'm sure I'll buy one later in life and Rebecca and I will tour the mountains on it. But, until then, we will be sticking with 4 doors and a cage.

That said, I wish I had one to go riding with you guys!!! Sounds like it will be alot of fun!!!

Since I have such a low participation level I barely qualify as a THSCC member anymore but, I'm always up from some motorcycle riding. Which, of course is the reason I have such a low participation level. So many toys, not enough time. :)

Anyway, I'm game for both a weekend trip and local riding around Raleigh area.

Oh by the way, what bike did you get?

Shawn

I ride a bit -'03 Triumph Bonneville (with the "feelers" worn off the pegs at the Dragon). Be interested in a group ride.

four stroke bikes are the way things are going this is inevitable, and some stupendously fast four stroke bikes exist, however, two stroke bikes are awesome to me.. y ou can still supercharge them, look at two stroke diesels like detroits ....

I was a daily rider for years and even went for about a year with just a bike(KZ1000). Now I am mostly a bike tinkerer. Here is my current long term project, a 1976 RD400. Mostly stock motor, 30mm carbs, wheels converted to rd350 wires, new adjustable front brake, solid state ignition added, tapered bearing headset, one-off rear sets, Eldi clipons, bronze swing arm bushings in a 350(shorter) swing arm. Still needs some debugging and a tailsection.

Thirty year old TWO STROKE motorcycles.

Wait til you see the '76 Celica that spent some time under water and has a hole you could crawl thru in the roof.

I almost bought one of the Bonnevilles, but decided on the BMW. The Triumphs are nice bikes. I started to ride in March/April and have put over 7,000 miles on my bike.

Took the MSF class first, best damn $120 I ever spent.
