OK, for those who don't know about it yet- guess I'll let the cat out of the bag. The new self-service "Pick and Pull" junkyard on Hwy 70 between Garner and Clayton is now open! Has been open for a couple of weeks actually.

It's the former Raleigh Auto Parts/LKQ auto parts location, still owned and operated by LKQ, but now it's 100% self-service. Not alot of really late model cars, but they have LOTS of cars and trucks, and they turn over the inventory fairly often (~45-60 days) so if you don't find what you need one day, come back in a couple of weeks and it might be there!! They have plenty of cars in the "hold" area waiting to be processed and put out on the yard.

A couple of interesting cars I saw today:

60's Dodge Dart
2nd Gen Nissan 240SX
Ford Fiesta
Several Ford Probes- both body styles
A couple of Subarus- I think they said "WRX Sti" on them :P
Early (~72 240z) plus a couple of 280zx's
A couple of Hondas- CRX's and some early Civics
A handful of BMWs :)

Basically it's a typical pick-n-pull yard, you pay $2 to get on the yard, sign a waiver and open your tool box to make sure you aren't carrying any grenades- then you're free to get whatever you want. Prices are posted on the wall, and they're the same regardless of year/make/model for each part. Be aware that they do charge a core charge on some items- and they charge for every part that might be attached to something else. For example- if you purchase an engine- the price listed is like $129, but if you leave the manifolds on there, they will charge you for them and any other parts bolted to the engine, etc.

Looks like a great place to get some new wheels for a certain rally beater.............Charlie..................cough...................cough..............

Oh yeah. At least 4-5 A2's and a couple of A1's and A3's. No diesels though.... :(

Best thing is they are open 7 days a week- 10-6 during the week and 8-6 on weekends......... Wonder if I can buy a yearly pass??? :)

Bret (or anyone who's been there) have you seen any late model Chevy Cavaliers there? If so let me know I need to make a trip over there soon.

Vincent,

I was just there the other day, but I don't really check the GM section so I can't say. They don't have any customer phone lines to call and check either. They are moving cars in there at a pretty good rate, not as good as it could be, but not too bad. I'll try to check it out for you next time I'm there- what is the definition of "late model Cavalier??" in terms of year model?

1995-2005 which are 3gen J-bodies. Chevy Cavalier and Pontiac Sunfire models are the same.

Negatory Ghost Rider.

Saw an MX3, a couple of Taurus SHO's, some early-mid '90's Hondas (no SI's that I could see), A couple of Protege's, even a '76 BM@ 2002..........there's always something new there.

Hmm - maybe I should go pick up some spare body panels for the race car. I could use a few more spares in my garage. I wonder what a door and/or front fenders sell for there.

A group of us went to LKQ last Saturday. They were plenty busy with lots of people with wrenchs and wheel barrows full of parts. The enty fee is $2.00 and you get a loaner wheel barrow. All the cars are sitting up on old wheels and no jacks are allowed. Also no torches inside either. I guess they frown on fire or something.

The place is "sort of" organized. All Chevys on one side Fords on another, trucks in another spots and all the imports thrown in together with one another.

A lot of the cars were picked over already, but depending on what you were looking for you may get lucky. I got four wheel bearings off a 2000 model Cavalier for $48. Well worth my trip.

Has anybody noticed if there are any Subarus there? I'm still looking for a roof rack for the OBS.
