I have a few business trips planned in the next few weeks (leaving Monday) and I want to make sure I get this right... Has anyone flown this week and can confirm what airport security is/is not doing?

Sounds like as long as I check my chapstick, eyeliner, etc and don't try to carry any food or drink through security, no one is going to be giving me problems about my laptop, cellphone, MP3 player, books, etc? Any other items besides those on the list been giving anyone problems? I'd hate to get to security and find out I need to check my laptop.

How long until we're required to travel naked?

From aa.com:

Items Prohibited In Carry-On Baggage To/From ALL Destinations

Toiletries - shampoo, toothpaste, mouthwash, perfume, deodorant, shaving foam, aerosols
Cosmetic products - perfume, hair spray, lip gloss, mascara, nail polish, makeup removers/cleansers, foundation
Non-solid food items - soups, syrups, pressurized food containers (cheese or whipped cream), gelatin, pudding, yogurt
Liquid soaps, sanitizers, bath oils, bubble bath
Any pressurized containers
Any creams, ointments or lotions
All other liquids/gels not listed here

Exceptions To Restricted Carry-On Items

Breast milk, baby formula, baby food in small containers (if a baby or small child is traveling)
Prescription medicine with a name that matches the passenger's ticket
Insulin/liquid medication for diabetic passengers (limited to 5 ounces per container)
Essential non-prescription medicines (saline solution, for example, no more than 4 ounces)
For travel from non-U.K. airports, duty free items that include liquids or gels are allowed when delivered directly to the aircraft and/or immediately prior to boarding

We flew back in from Vermont on Monday. Different airline, but it's all the same. And what you've said matches our experience.

Leaving RDU, give yourself plenty of time. We flew out on Friday—the day after— and lots of people were caught off guard and it slowed things down.

You may not have to deal with that since it's old news now.

Security is incredibly bad though. I made it through (unintentionally) with a bottle of eye drops. (Left in my pack from a previous trip.) Good thing I don't have the Junior League Little Chemist Set. . . .

Connecting through NY on the way back, a woman made it all the way to the door of the plane with a half full Aquafina bottle before she set it down on the floor of the Jetway. Of her own accord.

I suspect flights in and out of the UK are only a good scare away from requiring passengers to wear neon green Borat thongs and hospital slippers. . . .

Mike,

Basically, if you carry on you computer, magazine, and a change of clothes you will be fine. Just make sure when you put your toiletries in your checked luggage, that you put them in ziplock bags. That way, if they leak, they don't get all over you clothes.

Arrive at the airport early, TSA (the bumbling fools that they are) are still having problems with the added restrictions. They were already slow and inefficient and having to look for hidden lipstick and sports drinks only made things worse.

I flew out of RDU this morning on Delta. Had a 7:50am flight and got there about 6:15am. Checked in online because I wasn't checking any bags, and was having breakfast at the little restaurant in the terminal by 6:30am.

Lip balm is okay (just put it in your pocket...it won't set off metal detectors and they don't make you empty pockets anyway). I had a laptop, iPod, etc and they just made me take the laptop out (like they have been doing for a while) and that was it. No problems.

My wife flew to London with my 4 year old son and her parents and sister on the day of the debacle. Talk about ugly. But they got there, albeit a little late. Hopefully they get back into RDU on time on Monday. I'm dying to see them (and I fly back in before they do from SLC).

Weather doesn't appear to suck too bad out here in Wendover. It's mid 80's, anyway. Could easily be 100's this time of year.

Had a co-worker fly the other day. They took and threw away her chapstick. YMMV.

Mike,

I flew from RDU to La Guardia on Aug 15 (Tue, 3:00 pm flight) and came back the next day, 6:00 pm departrue from LGA.

The lines at security were almost nonexistent at RDU. It took me less than five minutes to get through security completely. The airport in general was not crowded at all. I carried on board two cameras in a single camera bag, and a briefcase. There were no problems.

I expected worse departing from La Guardia. To my surprise, it was as easy as getting out of RDU. I don't know if they just scared off half of the travelers that day.

Now, traveling out of NY by car to Long Island was typical, crawling speed for about an hour followed by one hour to travel the next 40 miles or so...

As always, your experiences may vary.

Miles

Security at RDU was a breeze. Probably the fastest I've ever been through. Guy in front of me had his waterbottle confiscated. Makes those Sierra Mist commercials even more funny.

Anyone planning on heeding the new "arrive at the airport 2 hours early" advice -- don't bother unless it's peak times or you have unusual circumstances. I made it from parking lot -> gate in 15 minutes.

YMMV :)

I concur with Mike. Same thing for us in SLC. Strangely, the food situation at RDU before 6am is a whole lot better than SLC. Nothing in SLC is open before then. :(

It's reassuring to know all of our homeland security money is being well spent. My wife made it all the way to St Lucia with her Spyderco Delica in her carry on last November!!! I think we went through xray twice.

I know some Italian sports cars are small, but that's ridiculous.

Cars on the brain... just got back from Pebble Beach/Monterey Historics. Security at RDU at 5:25 AM last Wednesday took less than a 5 minutes. Too bad my flight was at 9 AM. On the return Monday, my friend was searched by security at the San Jose airport. Apparently if you cause the metal detector to go off twice, it's automatic. Both his cell phone and his belt buckle were enough to make a beep, and it took him two tries to figure all of that out. Then, I had my backpack searched and received a patdown at the gate. I think that airport's security is pickier than RDU, since they confiscated my UNC keychain tag two years ago, claiming the little screwdriver tabs on it constituted a tool. Luckily, I was not carrying my THSCC bottle opener that day.
