Wow seems like I have been posting a lot of non-car topics to the forums :)

Anyone here ever go to local gun shows? I haven't been to a show since I was a kid -- I have a Nazi WW2 issue Walther P-38 that I'm interested in selling and I'm shopping for a more modern high-capacity 9mm handgun. I figured a show would be a good place to start.

If anyone is planning to go to a show sometime let me know, I might want to tag along.

Also, any recommendations for a relatively inexpensive 9mm would be appreciated! Just for occasional target practice and "home security".

Best home security is a 12 gauge shot gun, pump with a short barrel. For the range I like my Ruger Mark 1 22 cal. very accurate and inexpensive to fire.

you couldn't get better advice...handguns do NOT equal home defense

Mike,

I've been to the local "Dixie Gun and Knife" show a couple of times in the past few years at the Fairgrounds. They seem to come thru about 2x per year- I think there's one coming up soon. Cost about $7 to get in, and they always seem to have lots of vendors, and some VERY interesting clientele. Can't comment too much on the prices, it seemed to me that some were really high and some were just OK. I have a Glock 17 9mm if you want to try it out some time- just bring some ammo :)

Exactly. Remington 870 pump with, I think, a 21" barrel here. It just looks mean.

I have a shotgun that I really need to find a new storage method.

What do you guys do for "gun security" with little ones in the house? To me it seems like the "gun security" aspect conflicts with the "home security" aspect if you can't get to it quickly.

Since kids are more likely to be wandering around the house, safety comes first for me. I use the metal slip-through locks that prevent the gun from being loaded or even chambered. I have 100's of shells that for now are out of reach of 2 year-olds. I have not yet done so but I plan on getting a gun safe.

I guess just a regular gun safe. I think there are some vendors that make models that are geared more toward quick entry.

My theory (could be totally wrong) is that there are scenarios...

1. You have plenty of warning. (Someone outside trying to get in and it takes them a bit of time)
2. You wake up and someone is already in your bedroom looking you in the face.

I don't think I am going to be able to do much about #2 short of having an alarm, dog, etc. to wake me up earlier and convert #2 into #1. #1, I think I have enough time to call 911 and get something out of my gun safe.

It has been a few years since I last attended. One of my favorites was the videos of the bikini clad models operating machine guns. Shown in slow motion. The other was the guys that looked to have some type of inferiority complex and was making up for it by carrying around the largest weapon(s) they could legally get into the building.

Sorry that I can't recommend any handguns Mike. I have been away from this (keeping up on this) for years. Only have opinions on basic strategy on how to go about this.

I do have the question of... If you already have 7 handguns. And you are focused on home security. I assume you feel that non of those seven will work for you? Too small (22), too large (50 cal desert eagle with custom handloads that will not look good in court?). Why the need for #8 (not that there is anything wrong with that).

You are not asking, but I don't see any comments regarding ammo. For example regarding the shotgun route. I am not going to be using a 12 guage with 00 buckshot in my house for self defense. Most likely I IMHO will be using bird shot.

In the close quarters of a home I seriously doubt there's any difference in what shot size you use. any way you cut it you're going to do major damage to whatever is in the path. Deer shot with #7 at thirty feet look as if they were hit by a 30mm antiaircraft round. A good watch dog (1) an alarm system (2) will probably prevent the necessity of ever using the weapon.

I think the point was that 00 buck will go through walls pretty easily within the home whereas birdshot does not have the mass to go as far after it hits the first object.

I agree that at 10 feet the entry hole into a body will be equally as big with either.

My theory on the size of shot is that while at close range, whoever gets hit is going to hurt regardless of size. I am more concerned about downrange issues. There are no guarentees for sure, but with the birdshot, I am "hoping" to be less likely I will be penetrating multiple walls in the house. Still some of this logic is as if you are planning on having a running gun battle in your house and that is most likely going to be zero anyhow.

I am probably going to shutup now as we are answering questions that I think Mike really isn't interested in. And that just continues as a high jack of his thread. :)
