NASCAR has the same technology available, they just chose not to use it in efforts to make the challenge greater on the drivers. I mean with auto-reving electronic H&T, traction control, etc where does the driver come in?

IIRC, a typical Nextel Cup car cost about $100,000.00. What does an F1 car cost...$1,000,000.00?

Richard, if you want to watch fun racing go to a local oval. I like Kenly, 3/8th paved. The ISMA cars are my favorite.

I was watching one of the thousands of Nascar tech programs on SPEED and the tech was building a frame. He was checking for square with a tape measure, which is not a bad way to do it, but they must have had the high technology tucked away in a box.

Chuck you should visit ECMS in Robersonville, NC. I was there last Saturday night. They had the USCA Midgets in town and man they are fast. They also have a kids class that is fun to watch. The fun is in a class called "UCAR" which stands for "U Can Afford to Race. They had 15 cars last week on a 3/8 mile oval. Now *that* was a good race! No "follow the leader" at this track. Bump and run just like Tony Stewart! Here are the rules...

Quote:
Car Models:
1. 1980 or later American and import front wheel drive only. Maximum wheelbase of 105".
2. Completely stock for that make and model (body, frame, suspension, dash, steering,
pedals, brakes, etc.) Quick release steering wheel coupler allowed. Car can start with
9
ignition key or toggle switch. Dash must be complete including gauges, radio an A/C
Controls.
3. No bracing or body modifications. Stock bumpers front and rear. Chains required on both
bumpers for towing. No cutting of any body parts or removal or inner structures
4. Stock ride height for car being run.
5. All insulation under hood must be removed.
6. Stock carburetor/fuel injection system for that make and model.
7. No turbo or super-charged systems allowed.
8. Factory stock air cleaner system with no modifications. No K& N filters allowed.
9. 4 cylinder only. No quad 4’s, 2 Valves Per Cylinder Max.
10. No dual overhead cam engines allowed.
11. Battery must remain under the hood in stock location and well secured.
12. Passenger car tires only. All four wheels and tires must be the same and must all be 70
series tires. All four tires must be Radials, No Bias-Ply tires allowed. No Shaved tires
13. No soaking of any tires permitted
14. Low profile tires or performance tires are not permitted.
15. Stock wheels, stock suspension in stock position. No Altering of camber or caster
adjusters. Cam bolts must be stock. No altering of any shocks, springs or struts. No
spacers, shims or spring reinforcements of any kind. Stock Springs that came on car, in
other words, no 6cyl springs allowed on a 4cyl car (Both must be equal diameter on Left
and Right sides)
16. Stock transmission 5spd or Automatic and stock differential (no locked differential).
17. Broken windshields may be replaced with 1/8" LEXAN. No Plexiglas.
18. Removal of A/C condenser and pump is allowed.
19. Removal of inertia switch is allowed (Fuel shut off – Ford).
20. Removal of rear seat allowed. But must cover rear firewall with aluminum or steel sheet
metal if running a fuel cell.
21. Electric engine cooling fans may be wired to run constantly.
22. No added weight of any kind is allowed.
23. Exhaust: Must run factory exhaust manifold for that car. Must run muffler, glass pack or
turbo type allowed. Must have tailpipe exit either in front of rear tire or run past rear
bumper. Resonated exhaust tips not allowed.

Just to keep 'em honest they use a fair claim rule also:

Quote:
Claim Rule-THIS IS THE CORRECT CLAIM RULE FOR 2006!
Claim and Exchange rule is in effect at all times. Claim amount is $500.00 + Your Car. This will
allow the claimant and claimer to continue to race the following week. Only the driver finishing
one position behind can claim the car ahead of him. This claim is for the whole car minus your
Seat and Harness. If you can’t build a car for $500.00 then don’t build one for this class. Any
driver who refuses a claim will be disqualified for the next two events. If he/she denies a claim a
second time in the same season he/she will be suspended for the remainder of the season. We
are going to put the “Stock” back into Stock Car Racing. If you do not see it in the rules or specifications.
DO NOT DO IT! This division is intended for those who wish to race but don’t want to
spend a lot of money. For those wishing to stretch the rules or spend more than $500.00 in a car,
then pick a different division. This division is slated to be the most exciting of all divisions at
ECMS and kept affordable enough for all to enjoy.

You know I need to do that. It really is true that the more grassroots it is, the better it is to watch.

While it takes a lot of money (relative) to do well at SCCA runoffs they still are sort of grassroots in the grand scheme of things. So I also enjoy watching those. Speed Channel shows the SCCA runoffs over a period of time at the end of the racing season. I record those all and watch them over the winter.

Amen!!! Unfortunately money talks. And showing some lowly ameteurs in cars that actually resemble and are close to the original production car isn't a big money maker. It's probably the only venue where they use the term "stock car" to actually mean it. We have a Monte Carlo. It's nothing like the Hendricks ones NASCAR drives on the weekends... When we got it there was no "option group" at the dealership for "Hendricks Nascar Edition" As Rob said, that went away back when you could order a Superbird and pick it up at the dealer and go racing...

I want to see more of the Grassroots racing too. All of the SCCA stuff and the Rally stuff. I don't care if they air it at 3am. I'll record it.

The old Speedvision is gone. Bummer...

Speedvision would not be around any more if they did not have NASCAR coverage and funding. Having talked with some people in know when I was more involved with NASA, Speedvision was not making a whole lot of money, had probably would have shutdown if not for the influx of viewiers and money that happend when FOX bought them. As much as I dislike that nascar is as popular as it is, it is hard to have a racing channel that does not show your contries most popular race series.

I know that Speedvision probably wouldn't still be here if Fox hadn't bought them. I was just trying to dredge up an old thread on how Fox and NASCAR are evil and trying to keep the grassroots racers down.

Somewhat of a thread hijack...

In lieu of a boring THSCC fall party and concours, what do y'all say we have a picnic followed by a mass outing to Wake County Speedway?

If there is interest, I'll organize it. In my official position of Member At Large it is my duty to make sure that people drink a lot of beer and jeopardize their hearing.

anybody else see Paul Tracey today? he needs to be in Nascar.

to paraphrase Tracey's remarks, "he (Jourdain maybe) came over as if he wanted a piece of me, I was waiting for him to take off his helmet, but it seems French guys like to keep their helmets on"

priceless redneck banter. Ricky Bobby would be proud.
