The DVD is out for "The World's Fastest Indian," the story of New Zealand motorcycle builder and racer Burt Munro. Burt's story is summarized at this link:
http://www.indianmotorbikes.com/feature ... /munro.htm . If you rent the DVD, the first half of which is a feel-good movie about his trip to and through the U.S. to the Bonneville salt flats, be sure to watch the included half-hour documentary, "Offerings to the God of Speed," which was made in 1971 and features footage of the real Burt Munro.
This guy set land speed records, one of which still stands from 1967, on the same 1920 Indian Scout motorcyle which he upgrades constantly, casting his own pistons, using dug-up sewer pipe for cylinders, and making race tires by shaving tread off regular tires with a kitchen carving knife.
The only place the movie departs from history is by combining facts from several runs he made from 1962 to 1967 into his first run in 1962, but he did indeed set a class record on his first try, and he did once lose control at over 200 mph, although his highest officially timed speed was around 190 mph.
Not bad for someone born in 1899.
