Yeah, because responsible gun ownership is so hard to comprehend.

Only for handguns.

just out of interest, why both 9mm nad .40 cal? most often, it is cheaper and less hassel to purchase two guns

Are you planning to kill someone and dispose of the offending barrel?

Hmmm. I just put a hundred rounds of .40 cal through a Glock 23 at http://www.pdhsc.com/ in Garner. Nice well ventilated range, good service, and the handgun rental was more than fair. I have the sneaking suspicion that I've gotten another expensive hobby.

Also, there was a guy there in a silver E36 M3 sedan that had a rollbar in it; I didn't notice that until we both had left. Any idea who he could be? He sort of looked like Ron Spencer, but I wasn't sure.

I'm interested shooting the XD compact, but I beelined for the Glock after shooting a friend's G-19 on New Year's Eve. I didn't care for the DAK trigger of the Sig 229 DAK .40. At all. Another friend's .357 revolver was nice, but the ammunition was $$$. I'm also thinking about a 1911, but then again the .45 is still $$. I won't own a Smith and Wesson out of principle.

I still need some practice -- this is at 20 yards. Not bad, but definitely nothing to brag about.

That's really not bad for Glock. The only "performance" they are generally known for is actually getting a bullet out of the barrel pretty much every damned time. Outside of that, well, you see what you get. Don't get me wrong, I love them as self defense weapons, and have even been known to take out a feral cat at ~60 yards at dusk with one. But a little luck may have played a part. ;)

If you want something that's more accurate yet still well made, consider the Sig's. But if you just want something reliable, cheap to shoot, and well made, a 9mm Glock can't be beat. I like the .40 for stopping power, but I find they shoot so similarly that I shoot my 9mm most of the time just because of how much cheaper the ammo is. If I'm at a range and want to shoot accurately, I shoot my Sig. I own a S&W, but it's somewhere in between the Sig and the Glock. It's the gun that's jammed on me the most, but I think that was just an ammo mismatch issue (which, while annoying, is somewhat fixable...that said, you rarely have that kind of issue with a Glock, too).

That'c certainly better than my pattern from my last trip to MN shooting one of these

Hard not to flinch knowing what that beast is about to do, especially when you're shooting hand-loaded max-power rounds.

Donnie, have you looked into the Advantage Arms .22 conversion kit for the Glock? It looks neat, and the price per brick definitely is appealing. I've seen others rave over it, and I think that for putting holes in paper it really fits the bill.

Bah, screw you and your anti-S&W bias, *this* is the gun for putting holes in paper. I have one and it's my favorite gun to shoot. S&W Model 41 22LR.

Damn, it's been a while, I need to get out to the range. Wes, lemme know next time you're going out.

Just out of curiosity, because I'm basically gun illiterate (I'm not anti gun, I love shooting them, just don't own one), what is the problem with S&W?

I haven't looked into the .22 conversion, but I have heard good things about it. The only thing I fear is that while .22 shells are cheap, you do need to buy much better ones than the cheapest stuff or you'll still have all sorts of jamming difficulty. I'm cheap with my Ruger 1022 and thus while it's fun, it's still a bit frustrating to have to clear jams often. (But there are few rifles that are that cheap to shoot and enjoy *that* much aftermarket support...it's one awesomely cheap gun that every enthusiast should have around if for nothing else than helping introduce novices to the sport).

Mike definitely has the right idea if you want to get fairly serious about holes in paper with a pistol. You can get something *very* accurate for the same price as a Glock .40. But each has its place...I wouldn't be wanting to stop some dope-head coming through the window of my house with the .22. Okay, it would be better than nothing, but give me the .40 instead any day. :)

Oh, and if you want the most innaccurate pistol in the world, get a Kel-tec and your concealed carry permit. Thing will fit in your back pocket without drawing attention to itself if you want and still hold six bullets or so. It's more a "get off me" gun as outside of that kind of range you're probably not going to be able to hit much, but for folks who *have* to have tiny or they won't carry at all, it's a great option.

My personal preference for concealed carry is the Kimber Arms ultra carry. It's as accurate as any 45 cal weapon made thats not strictly a target pistol. It will fit in your back pocket also, and carries six in the mag +1 in the chamber. I don't like the Glock for home defense because it's too easy to discharge with only the trigger safety. Groping around for that gun in the dark while half asleep is an accident waiting to happen in my opinion.
Bernie, I am usually packing, Baake

That's another good choice, Bernie. It's a good bit larger than a Kel-tec .32, though. Probably small enough for most, and if it is small enough for you then it is a good choice as it is going to be a good bit more accurate and pack more power. The Kel-tec is going to be a lot lighter, too, though. Sometimes important for a lady going with a small purse or something, or a guy who may not want something quite as big as the Kimber.

I may have to look at one myself.
