I'll come if you guys don't mind listening to my crank creak every time I peddle. Ever since I replaced my bottom bracket the thing creaks like hell. I can ride during the week often too.

Take the BB back out and put teflon tape on the threads, grease the shell and the inside of the loose(left side) cup. Reinstall. If you have square taper spindle leave it dry, but grease the threads.. If you have octalink or ISIS grease the spindle and interior of the crank, grease the bolts and both sides of the washers.

Hey, while you guys are offering bike advice, my bike needs a tuneup. The front derailleur(sp?) will shift between the small and medium gear and back again, or the medium and large gear, but I have to choose which pair I want to use before the ride. :-) I tried following the adjustment steps in the bike manual, but I'm apparently not understanding something because that didn't get me anywhere.

I was going to take it to a professional, but both REI and Performance in Chapel Hill wanted $120+ and said they'd only do "light cleaning and adjustment" for that price. :!: I didn't mention that the derailleurs are pretty dirty, and I don't want to drop a huge wad of cash on this and then still not have it working right! I am apparently not that serious about getting actual physical exercise (though I guess the bike still pushes fine... :-) )

So if anyone has suggestions for either things I can try at home (secret tips on how to actually adjust the front derailleur), or a line on someone who'll do a good tuneup on my bike for less than $100 (preferably much less), please let me know.

Thanks!

It sounds like your shifter may not be going thru all the clicks. But first, to adjust it, take the cable loose and then screw the adjuster(at the shifter) all the way in and then back out about two turns. Pedal the bike thru and let the chain and der drop to the lowest position. Make sure the der is set with the bottom of the cage about 2mm above the top of the big ring and that it is parallel to slightly tail out. Shift the rear der up to the big cog and using the screw marked "L" on the front der adjust the cage so it is about 1mm from touching the chain. Now make sure the shifter is shifted to the lowest gear and reattach the cable. Shift the front up to the middle gear. You may need to hold the button down until the chain comes up. If it will not shift up at all tighten the adjuster(counterclockwise). If it does shift up check to see if the chain rubs on the inside. If it does loosen the adjuster(clockwise) just enough to get it to stop. Shift the rear to the smallest cog and confirm no rubbing on the outside of the cage. adjust slightly if needed. Now shift the front up to the biggest ring. If it will not go you need to adjust the "H" screw out to allow it. If it falls off the outside you need to tighten the "H" screw. If it shifts up and when you let go of the shifter button it falls back. There is a problem in the shifter. The first thing to do is spray some carb cleaner inside the shifter and shift it up and down some then spray some more in there, repeat. If this does not free up the sticking ratchet, then the shifter needs to come apart and be more thouroughly cleaned or it has a broken spring and needs replaced.
I do a full tune up:adj. hubs, true wheels, adj gears, brakes, BB, headset, wipedown bike for $60 but I believe we will be going up to $70 this year.

Also note that if you want good service for a good price, the best bike shop in your area is the Clean Machine in Carrboro.

Wed is my best chance to go this week. I'd go today but my stuff is at the house.

I'm all set for Crabtree at 5:30 tomorrow. Couple of my co-workers should be there too.
