yes - the under $20k is the original price of the car (MSRP), not what you paid, and not including mods.

The only issue I see with your idea is that you cannot wear sponsors that compete/conflict with any of the official sponsors. So running Sport Compact Car on the side would be against the rules. Of course, we could always do it unofficially and have them support us for an article down the road.

thats definately a thought.

OK, it is throwing comfort out the window, but what about a Factory Five? The performance is nothing short of stunning, it would put you in the under $40K over 3.5L class, from all I have heard in the Spec Snake series they are basically bulletproof, and there a couple of guys named Roush and Yates around Charlotte that probably have a part or two that would help you get some decent power out of a small block Ford. What are the rules about pulling a trailer? If you can pull a trailer, you might just be able to make it work. I don't know of many cars that could outrun a $40K Factory Five.

the factory five idea has been considered. You can pull a trailer (most teams do). But the open cockpit doesn't sound like fun on a cold rainy night. Last year someone ran a Radical 'busa for the One Lap... talk about crazy.

You are right though, the Factory Five would be a good choice for the under $40k Large Bore class. hmmm do they make a hard top for them?

I would think that someone has to make a top for them. If not, I am sure that an entrepneurial fiberglass fabricator would love to have you as a test case.

Don't they (Factory Five) make a Daytona Cobra Replica? That would be a bit more practical than the roadster.

The AWD DSM is a great candidate, as it is likely going to rain at least one day, and the wet skidpad test would be good in that car as well.

Did anyone ever buy Dennis Grant's 2g DSM? That would be an AWSOME starting point.

If you do decide to go with the DSM, between Jason Mauldin, Tom Freeman, Les Davis and I, we can tell you pretty much anything you wanna know.

Without re-inventing the wheel, you could have a absolute terror that could run 12's at the strip (11's with a damn good driver) and be damn good on the track as well. There is a drag portion isnt there?

Check out Sport Compact Car for some of the Ultimate Street Car Challenge DSM's.

Coupe FF. At $14,900 for the kit, I honestly cannot imagine a better way to go than that. Superior aero to the roadster and weather protection as well.

While the 2 seaters would be a blast to drive, a 4 seater would make it easier for me to go along and share driving duties, along with Adam and Peter.

Adam

I thought of one other <20k econo car that would be pretty good. the Mazda 3. They did pretty well at the Run-Offs and obviously Mazda gives great race support.

Does SCC compete directly with C/D? I thought C/D just ran a "David vs Goliath" tuner challenge thing a few months ago where some tuner outfit hired Pierre Kleinubing to drive their car. Might be different market segments?

Another thing behind the hybrid Honda - it's a cookbook kind of thing that's been done to death, successfully, a million times. Rather than some kit car thing or, worse, some fiasco like a Chevy with a Ford motor or a BMW with a Hyundai motor. Those kinds of Frankenstein projects don't strike me as the best thing for an event where reliability is paramount.

I know guys expert in doing everything from putting an Integra Type R motor into a Civic, to putting an RSX Type S motor into an Integra Type R. Cookbook. Buy these parts, install, and go. IF you decide to go down the Honda hybrid road, I can put you in contact with some pretty smart people.

HTH.

Here is THE DSM

http://sccaforums.com/forums/152969/ShowPost.aspx

It was still for sale at New Years, its worth a shot. That cars prep is flawless, no cost spared.

right now the guy with the money is leaning towards an E46 M3 w/ some significant mods.

Our goal would be to go for the SSGT1 Small Bore win and an overall top 10 finish.

I think the platform can do well, I just hope no factory backed projects show up. We will need to get our 1/4 mile time down into the 12s and our skidpad g test in the .95X range on street tires. Neither of those are an easy task.

Then if I can drive with my head actually out of my butt for a few days, I think we could make a run at the class.

That is the current thought right now... of course things will likely change over the next few days/weeks.

How do you do that for $40K? I thought that those cars still traded in the low to mid thirties. Did they take a hit with the recent introduction of the E90?

Not a bad choice if it is in the budget.
