What kind of answer is that, not everyone keeps up with all the issue about paypal, so if you know the answer, say something, cause I would like to know also, I think I know the answer but I am not sure.

Hey, Scott's not president any more, so he's entitled to be a jackass whenever he wants to. It's in the club by-laws. Scott, welcome to the Ex-President's club!

OK, I'll rephrase...

At this point we do NOT accept membership does via PayPal. While it's a service our membership would appreciate, it is also a service that none of our member-officers have time to manage.

At some point, if someone feels up to it, that member can VOLUNTEER to administrate the membership poriton of PayPal. When that happens, the officers can consider accepting that help. However, we would likely need to add a surcharge to the membership payments in order to cover the fees associated with using PayPal.

IMHO, we should can PayPal alltogether, and re-invest the money we save back into the club. That money would have covered 100% of the cost of the Christmas Party, or added some nice raffle prizes. Maybe we would just run a FREE members only event with that money.

On the other hand, we could use the money we save to offer free events to ALL the staff members that make our events possible.

In the mean time, the best way to pay dues is by cash or check at a monthly meeting, or by printing, filling out and mailing this form with a check made out to THSCC.

OK, I am officially volunteering to be VP of Paypal. Seriously.

If anyone wants to take me up on it- email or PM me.

I think the benefits/ease of use of Paypal far outweigh the minimal cost.

If we are really concerned about it, we could set up a "personal" Paypal account that is FREE to receive payments, but has a $$$ limit per month (might be a problem there.....). Or, we could charge a very small fee (against Paypal rules BTW) for people who choose to pay that way.

This is a limited time offer, act now!!!! :)

WOW, you guys want me to let the cat out of the bag before the Jan meeting.

We ARE keeping Pay Pal for AX payment 06.

As far as paying member dues? I dont know about that, lets run some numbers.

Currently we have roughly 428 members, and let's say that all of them renew via Pay Pal. Let's also assume that all are Single renewals (it makes the math easier)

Pay charges 2.9% +$0.30 per transaction which translates into $1.025 per renewal * 428 = $438.70 that the club EATS currently. This is absolute worse case and I realize it will be much less this year.

But what about next year or 5 years from now, it may become the defacto way to renew. At that point, adding the AX registration fees and the membership renewal fees would start approaching $1,000/yr.

Do we want to make Pay Pal rich for transferring money from your account to the clubs? Are there alternate ways to take online payments?

I agree with Scott on this one. 2.9% + $.30 per transaction is not cheap. On a $20 transaction, that equates to 4.4% of lost revenue. I was amazed that the club didn't raise Paypal payments to cover the fee (why this is illegal is beyond me). Yes, the club can't use personal paypal because it brings in to much $ for that.

The hassle with Paypal is two fold: It cost's the club money and is another thing that we need to monitor... and those that use it don't all use the THSCC click thru after registering for an event, thus money comes in and they have no idea who it's from or how to apply it. A real pain in the rear if you ask me. - AB

I agree that the cost is some what expensive, especially when the club (all members) are paying for the convenience of this service for a few of the members.
On the other hand however, it is CONVENIENT, and Bret has graciously volenteered to take this on. So the Work aspect is a non player. I'm sure that with ALL THE BRAIN POWER in this club we should be able to find a way to defer the cost of Paypal back to the members who are using it.

IIRC it isn't illegal, but it *is* against ebay's policy for auctions. (ebay also owns PayPal).

So, we charge an extra $1.00 to those who wish to use Paypal. This is not really a huge issue- if people don't want to pay the extra $1, they can pay the 0.39 cents to mail the payment, or burn $3 worth of gas and $10 on a buffet dinner to pay in person at one of the monthly meetings.

Those who don't like it can "suck it"--- (thanks Wes...)...

My offer still stands, I'll handle all the "hassles" of Paypal.

Has anyone checked into what it costs to process Master Card and Visa online? I would suspect it is similar to paypal.
