This is one of the better segments I've seen lately. It's ironic because I was just recently playing GT 2 (no laughing- I'm a techno grouch) and during the endurance race was wondering how authentic some of the car's times actually were. Anyhow, this is not a bad way to spend 10 minutes.

I've got to get the play station out and see if I can beat the 1:41. It seems I've done that before and was faster. But I always do the suspension and engine mods

I had to try it. I went to Arcade mode and Time Trial, select the Acura NSX, I even choose the same color, blue. I didn't change anything on the car.
Took me a few laps to learn the car and get in the 1:41 time range. The best I did was 1:40.8. I decided to change the tire form Sport medium to Sport soft.
The car handle better and the best time was 1:39.2. Spending more time on it, faster time can be done, but not huge gain.

The cars are definitely harder to drive in Forza than Gran Turismo. Forza really takes some getting used to - Gran Turismo is for hacks.

Is it having problems reading the cd or is it just not turning on?

I recently picked up GT4 again to find my disk had gotten so scratched the PS2 wouldn't play it. I actually took the cd to the garage and hit it up with car wax.

With the scratches removed the disc and the playstation are both happy again.

ok, I have Forza. I will have to dust if off and try it out in my new Xbox 360 to see what time I can set with the NSX at Laguna Seca. We are talking totally stock, with no mods right?

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

oh, and I watched the video. I wish he had mentioned how much (if any) playing the PS2 helped him get up to speed on the track. I think that would have been a better thing to comment on. I am not suprised at all about not being able to replicate the times. Using braking points, etc. from the game is just insane.

When Forza was about to be released months ago, there was an interesting article in Popular Science about it.

http://www.popsci.com/popsci/automotive ... drcrd.html

They basically have two people (one is a pro driver) play the game and drive for real at Road Atlanta. Basically they were trying to decide how close the game was to the real thing.

I think him commenting on fear and the possibility of accident but driving without a helmet was a little ironic.

Well the entire (apparent) lack of safety in that show is an entire topic. ;)

It is pretty obvious why you can crank out fast times in computer games. The lack of physical harm allows you to take crazy risks that you couldn't do in real life. Or at a minium accelerate the learning curve by allowing lots of mistakes with no penalty. The Pop Sci article about Forza mentions this as well as how others who do simulations (such as the military) have this problem. The solution that the military uses (according to the article) is high voltage shocks to those using the simulation when they screw up (cue reference to negative reinforcement and its effect on ESP from the movie Ghostbusters. Isn't it funny when the gum falls out of that guys mouth when Bill Murray shocks him!).

Tape a stun gun to your crotch and then rig it up to your controller so that excessive force feedback/rumble sets it off and I will "guarantee" that you will drive more carefully in GT or Forza.

I pulled out Forza to see what I could do. With the stock 2004 NSX-R at Laguna Seca with no driver aids and with manual transmission, I was able to do a 1:39.7. Most times were in the 1:41 range.
