You actually have somewhere between 24-48 hours to move a newly purchased car without any tag at all. All you need is the notarized title in hand, or a bill of sale with you. Couple years ago, a buddy and me flew out to Chicago and drove a Jetta back to Raleigh.. no tag, and never even got a second glance from anyone.

Be careful of the information you receive when you phone or go to the DMV; all but 2 DMV offices around here are "hired help", and don't have a freaking clue what the real laws are

I've been on both ends of an OOS used car purchase, as a buyer and a seller. In both cases the procedure was the same: transfer the title in the original owner's state and obtain a 30 day temp tag issued by that state to transport the vehicle. Yes, in both cases it needed to be done on a day when the DMV was open, that's just one of the inconveniences of buying or selling OOS. On the NC to OOS sale, the NC plates needed to be surrendered when the temp plates were issued. I would NEVER sell a vehicle to someone and let them drive off with it without the ownership being transfered and registered to them first, WAY too many risks involved IMHO.

What is a registered check? Just curious. I've used certified checks but never registered.
