Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed like a 10x increase in the last week? Maybe my email just got sold on some major list?

Well, I have been putting my live email all over the internet on forums, newsgroups, etc for years, and the spam level was tolerable (like 20/day) now it's up to 100 or more, just in the last week. Just wondering if anyone else noticed a change, like from some massive spam center starting up overseas or something.

I read in an article once that 80% of the spam comes from less than 20 people!

The spam going to my work email has more then doubled over the weekend. Maybe something to do with the No call list?

Unless you post your sig in one of the two open forums (forsale, visitors), the bots shouldn't be able to get ahold of your email. The easy solution to that is to just unclick the attach signature option when posting in those sections.

I had the same problem, prior to this forum starting. I did two things. 1) I got Add Aware (*FREE*) which cleans your system of all the crap that runs in the background. 2) I got Norton Internet Security and haven't had to use Add Aware since. BTW, I'm not sure where I found it, I'm sure yahoo can help you locate it.

Ad-aware (the free version) http://www.lavasoft.de/
I've been using it for about 2 yrs now. Works great.

I also use Zone Alarm for my firewall (also free).
http://www.zonelabs.com/

Then Norton Antivirus scans email when I pop it from Bellsouth to Outlook on my PC.

The Spam did jump way up in the past week. Mainly the get your prescription drugs on the Internet stuff...

VERY interesting summary of a spam research project here:

Highly recommended reading.

I've noticed a definite increase in spam, and a decrease in the effectiveness of my anti-spam software... :(

You could try doing something like this in your sig to fool the bots:

whitney_remove me first_@nogumracing.com

For anyone interested, I have been using K9 (http://www.keir.net/k9.html) for a few days now and it KICKS ASS. Recommended for anyone who uses a POP mail server and IE or other mail client, as it sits in between your mail client and the server, and filters using Bayesian filtering techniques. I get maybe 1 out of 20 spam emails, and after the initial learning period, I haven't had any false positives. It's pretty impressive.

Here's a picture of my stats page:

PS - I am going to continue to be stubborn and paste my email address freely and openly on the internet. Maybe I'm just dumb :) But I know it's annoying to deal with "manipulated" email addresses.

Good pick Mike! I've been running K9 for a couple of weeks now and it is getting very smart at filering out the Spam. I have it just dropping the junk off in a Spam folder but soon I'll just have it moved to the Trash. IT isn't perfect but it is darn good, especially at the price
