It was a long time coming. I've been going to the same place for years, and every time I manage to pass in spite of many actual infractions.

Thie year it wasn't to be. They finally failed me for the missing smog pump.

At least I now have 30 days to remedy the problem :)

I can get a smog pump easily, but it's a lot less convienient to make it spin, and even worse to make it look like it functions properly. I think it will be easier to find a "friendly"inspector that needs money for beer/kids/ex-wife, etc.

Of course, I've only put a whopping 900 miles on the car in the past year, maybe it's just time to quit registering it.

If you decide to take it off the road. You need to turn in the tags before the sticker expires. Otherwise you might get hit with the dreaded $250 fine.

Plus:

Don't cancel the mandatory insurance coverage until AFTER you've turned in the tags to a DMV "office".

I made that mistake once already. It was only a $50 fine...

I unregistered a car recently and waited a week to call the insurance place, to take care of exactly this sort of situation (being hit with the fine). The insurance place was very cool about it, they asked me what day I turned in the plates, and retroactively cancelled the insurance on the day after I turned in the plates (instead of doing it on the day I called). So that saved me paying for about 6 days of insurance, which isn't a big deal, but it was polite of them. :)

(Amica, if anyone was wondering)

Had the Porsche for Inspection today, it pass. The guy told me that in a few year I will not need to pass the state inspection anymore.
The law was change sometime this year and car older than 35 year will not need a state inspection. So in few year you will
be able to put it back on the road.

Found this on the web.

The North Carolina Law on vehicle inspections comes under NCGS §20-20-183.

In the 2003-2004 Legislative session, NCGS §20-20-183.2 was amended by adding a new subsection that became effective January 1, 2005:
"(a1) Safety Inspection Exception. – Historic vehicles, as defined in G.S. 20-79.4(b)(17), shall not be subject to a safety inspection pursuant to this Article."

Since the amended section referenced a different section:
G.S. (20-79.4(b)(17) This is actually the section on specialty liscense plates, but since the legistaltion above says "as defined", I don't think that you need to have the tag and that this paragraph is just being used as a definition of the type of vehicle that is exempt from inspection....

G.S. (20-79.4(b)(17) Historic Vehicle Owner. – Issuable for a motor vehicle that is at least 35 years old measured from the date of manufacture. The plate for an historic vehicle shall bear the word "Antique" unless the vehicle is a model year 1943 or older. The plate for a vehicle that is a model year 1943 or older shall bear the word "Antique" or the words "Horseless Carriage", at the option of the vehicle owner.

Chapter 20 of the General Statutes is located at:
