Hard to believe that I might say that.

Over the weekend our HD-DVR bit the dust. It was the Scientific Atlanta 8000. The SA-8000 was obsolete the day it was released, and even more so when we got one 6 months ago. The broken one was our 2nd.

Everything on the internet says that the SA-8000 has a tremendous failure rate, mostly due to the excessive heat in the case.

Not only did TW actually have a service person come on my schedule (mostly - 4:45 is close enough to quittin time), the tech came out, didn't ask questions, reboot, fuss, etc. He just gave me a new box (and hooked it up right this time, last time they hooked the digital audio out to the video out port...).

The best part is that it's a SA-8300. I've already noticed how much quicker it is when flipping channels, and flipping between 1080i output and 480p/i output. The hard drives are also MUCH quieter.

I swear the picture quality is also better on all channels.

The box is also cooler, with a much nicer front display. It tells you the signal output (1080i/480p/i) and a few other goodies. The old SA-8000 didn't have a bunch of the features/outputs enabled, I haven't investigated this one yet.

As a side note, you might wonder about the 1080i vs 480p/i options. If you set the box (advanced settings) to output more than 1080i, then it's likely you can apply your favorite zoom function on the TV to the signal.

My Toshiba can't zoom a 1080i signal, but when the box is set to output 480p/i the TV is able to use it's own zoom functions, rather than me relying on the crummy zoom built into the box. This means on ALL non HD stations my TV is doing the zooming, rather than the box. If it's an HD station, I'm stuck with whatever letterbox/sidebars they output.

We've had the SA Explorer 8300-HD for quite a while already. While it is MUCH better than the unit you did have (as we had that as well), it does have it's own problems (at least in our unit).

Good things:
- MUCH bigger HD for LOTS of HD and normal TV shows (I can record about 2 months worth of Speed TC/GT races, Grand Am, Trans Am, WRC + all the wife's stuff from HD without a "One week left" on anything for space considerations).

- Much more responsive

- Day switching button to surf between days

- The wife loves it (primary user).

Only Bad thing:

- My unit WILL reboot infrequently when switching between channels. It happens the most when jumping between HD and non-HD channels. This is not an ambient temp thing as it is in a relatively cool location need an air vent.

Unfortunately, WC will only allow you to record up to a week in advance (from the guide), but it is definitely a step in the right direction!

It is a much better unit, and you can tell which 480i channels are broadcasted 'better' than others (at least on our CRT you can).

Hope you enjoy it! Still makes me think of going Tivo instead with firewire and then piping that to a backup storage unit.... or just to put Linux on it :D

Plus TW finally went digital on the their regular channels. I was way cool watching the space shuttle launch on HD :)

counter point:
I just upgraded to a HD DVR (Need to go see which model) and it took TW about 10 attempts to get out to my house. Man, was I pissed.
I got every excuse from "I have a flat tire, my wife has to bring me my spare", to "oops I only have a non HD DVR on the truck", and finally "Oh I was late b/c another guy was supposed to come this morning". If the HD boxes weren't so expensive from dishnet I would have dropped TWC a week or so ago.

Yeah, so cool that my old non dvr box and the new dvr box quit playing those channels b/c TW couldn't deliver what they advertise (three connections) and had to put a amp on my signal... which involved another half dozen atempts...

Dear lord I hate TWC....

HD and DVR are pretty darn cool though.

These were the first words in this thread that I understood. I assume this doesn't apply to TW's standard service, since I was able to watch a History Channel show on "Wild West Tech", and then Rides (featuring Jay Leno's latest Duesenberg) tonight. Appropriate fare for the next to last analog TV in operation :)

I've got a bit of a luxury for dealing with the cable guy. I work 10 minutes from home, so all they have to do is call first and I can be there.

They tried to book 4 hour blocks for yesterday and I told them flat out that they had to do it on my time, I can't take a half day to wait for them to fix their busted stuff. They put me in for the afternoon, left a note with the tech to do my house last *and* to call first. It worked out great. He showed up at 4:45, 15 minutes after my warning call.

For anyone with a SA-8000 box, just leave a magazine on the top for a fwe days, it will self destruct.

The SA-8300 is also MUCH quieter.

checked... I've got the 8300. After you guys mentioned it I checked out all the settings it has. Pretty cool.

Glad I don't have the crappy one.

:( Unfortunatley I have the crappy one. Actually its worked fine for me so far. I've only had it a couple months, and it hasn't crashed more than once. I would like more HD space though, I fill it up rapidly. Guess, I'll "accidentally" leave a magazine laying on top this weekend....

So how much space is on the 8300? I'm new to the DVR thing and have no clue about what it can hold. Is there somewhere that I can get the HDD usage thus far?

channel 999 gives lots of interesting info. I know it will report the drive size, but I don't know if there is a way to get it to report the amount of used vs available.

http://www.scientificatlanta.com/consum ... 8300hd.htm

- 160GB hard drive::

Allows recording and storage of up to 90 hours of SD programming or 20 hours of HD programming.*

No way I know of off the top of my head to show HD space left.

Here is a thread about the HD and seeing space left on the HD. TWC Eastern NC people have trouble getting the HD Info to work due to TWC NC SW loads on the box::

Thanks for the heads-up Scott. I just called and ordered a 8300HD for next Friday. I'm "adding" it to my account, and I'll just return the 8000HD on my own time (after watching everything recorded). That avoided the discussions about "you want to upgrade a working unit?".

You guys do realize that you can just walk into the TW store on Atlantic Ave and they will give you a new box right then. No waiting. When I called the customer dis-service number they said "Oh, you can't install that yourself, a tech HAS to do it for you." CRAP!!!!!! The CSA at the store said "I don't know why they say you can't hook it up yourself. It really is VERY simple." All I had to do is hook the coax in to the back, run my cables to the TV and plug the damn thing in. Simple as that. 45 minutes after leaving my house, I was back home pausing live tv. Pretty damn cool if you ask me.

BTW - I have the SA-8000 and will be taking it back this Sat because I am getting weird pauses while watching recorded shows. I'll be bringing home a SA-8300 Saturday.

I would have preffered to drop my old box off and pick up a new one but the customer service insisted that only the techs carried them on the truck and they only carried the non-hd dvr in the store. I was skeptical... but decided to do what the rep said.... Later I was told by one of the technicians that came out that I could have gone straight to the store... live and learn I guess....

Funny observation... Ever notice how there is a layer of bullet proof glass between you and the clerks in the TWC stores?

I think they say this so that their contractors can make more money. They get paid based on the number of calls they do.

Hmmm..I wonder why that is????
