I drive a 2005 Subaru WRX and autocross it in DS. I have driven a couple of different STIs but never an Evo. Today I got sick of reading how great the Evo is in all the magazines. I went out to the Mitsu dealer and got to drive one. The dealer wasn't going to let me drive a new one but lucky for me they had a used one on the lot that had just come in the other day. The salesman that I was talking to was terribly ignorant when it came to the cars specs and all. During the drive he went around town and some back roads. Nothing to impressive, I got the chance to open it up on an on-ramp on the highway. It got up and went really well, about the same as an STI, but then on the off-ramp was where I was truly impressed. I merged off and didn't slow down much and around the curve I held the car in a four-wheel drift. I was amazed when I realized that I had the salesman laughing and saying to me how amazing this thing handles. Now I know for a fact my WRX would have been in a steady state of understeer at that point and even the STI that I had driven never would have held quite that well. I loved the steering but the brakes were a bit strange but that seems to be a universal complaint of all Evo drivers. Now with how amazing this car handles why does no one autocross them in our club or even in the surrounding clubs. I have only seen one at an autocross and that was in NY and an Evo did win ESPL at the national event in Topeka. Just seems a bit strange that no one would be using this car locally.

They're all too busy revving at all the Hondas & blowing up their transmissions at the drag strip to show up at an autox...

But have you 4-wheel-drifted a Forester XT on a test drive? 8)

So how did the boost come on compared to the WRX?

I think it's because Mitsu agressively pursued voiding people's warranties who were autocrossing. That or the Mitsu dealers around here are more difficult to work with than the Subies.

Of course, I'm an AWD tourist so the above could be complete fiction.

I'm not sure what I'm driving.
Maybe an ITR in DS.
Or half-assed STX prepped 330.

The boost came on about as fast as my WRX but not as quick as the STI. I figure that is because the STI is running the 2.5 liter with less boost so it responds a little better down low. And no I haven't four wheel drifted a Forester XT on a test drive. How are they, I saw Kevin make a run at the last autocross in his. My last car was a Honda CR-V and the XT came out right after I got mine. That pissed me off but a year and a half later I sold the CR-V and bought my WRX.

I'll just say this... if the wife & I were into street racing (which we're NOT! ) I could get the jump on the FXT (automatic) with my WRX at ~3k in 2nd gear, then have the FXT slowly walk away from me as we proceeded through 3rd gear. I wouldn't be sure what happens after that, because the wife would theoretically be lifting at that point. :D

As for handling, anybody who's been to a rallycross lately can tell you what the FXT will do on dirt, but on pavement the WRX owns it. With the Forester STi (yes, they do make those for the rest of the world) springs & some decent tires... uhhh... well, I'll probably know that story at some point this year. 8)

edit: actually, if we go to Greenville next weekend, we may run it in D Stock with Toyo RA-1's & everything else stock.

Kevin, I think we are still running under the gentleman's agreement for no race tires in DS. I don't know whether your Forester on RA1s would break the agreement but I figured that I would share the information. I won't be able to make it unfortunately but if you run it have fun.

Yeah, so Type R or WRX on Azeni vs. FXT on RA-1's... should they be afraid?
