has anyone ever done this themselves without taking it to a shop to have them pressed in? I have the subframe and trailing arms of the car and want to take out the old bushings and press in the new ones.. if anyone has a DIY way of doing this or has a press tool I could borrow please let me know. Thanks

If the trailing arm bushings are the same size as the ones on an E30, I have a nifty tool to push these out, no press required. Let me know if you want to borrow it.

Not sure about the subframe bushings - never did mine. Maybe I should!

Also, for a great technical resource, call Truett Ray at Shade Tree Garage in N. Raleigh - 847-3651, an independent BMW mechanic. He will usually dispense technical advice for free and does great work at reasonable prices. Dietrich also works there and is very knowledgeable about the dirty stuff.

If you do need a press and want to try it yourself, we can try it on my 12 ton press. No guarantees of success ;) Just drop me an email.

Recently this topic apeared on the E30 message board. the solution is to use a sawsall (or other suitable metal cutting device) to cut from the ID of the bushing almost all the way through the outer shell of the bushing. AT that point, use a drift punch to start tearing the outside of the bushing, which will then drop out. Installation is as follows.....forget the stock type rubber bushings and use aftermarket "hard" bushings, they usually just drop in with a little persuasion.
Otherwise just take the assembly to your local automotive machine shop (or Mike's garage). One accepts money, the other accepts beer.
