That's it. From now on, if forecast even is for freezing temperatures and cloudy skies, I'm driving something else. What a miserable experience.

I can plan ahead fine for stopping and turning, but OMG, I got stuck on like a 0.5 degree incline at a stop sign. No forward motion. Don't even think about it.

I just left the blue 325i daily driver in the parking lot at work. Hitched a ride from Karl to pick up my rally beater with LSD and crappy all-seasons (at his house - he was borrowing it). Mucho better.

Unfortunately the alternator decided to sh!t the bed on the way home. Hard to see those icy patches when projecting only 25 watts of light. Made it though - and the alternator is out :) Probably worn brushes ... 217k miles.

Sumitomo HTRZ-II on a Vette. Same problem. On level ground they're marginal. Add a small slope and you're done. Coworkers C5 with fairly worn Goodyear F1's even worse. Car no move... Then we go back in the office and watch out the window. Brand new C6 goes by. Up a big incline. Wheels never even spun.

Fortunately Ann was in Cary at a meeting. Monte Carlo, FWD, with old Tiger Paws. Climbs over damn near anything, turns fine, stops pretty decent. Only took me 5 hours to get home from SAS. A mere 13 miles...

The new Falken Ziex 512 tires did better than anything else I've run on the celica. I don't think I ever got into the bad stuff though, it seems Raleigh area was much icier than Durham.

Oh yeah, it took me the usual 10-15 minutes to get home via I-40.... westbound.

The Kumho ASX did well on the 240 (RWD and LSD). I didn't have much trouble climbing hills.

Bridgestone RE-950 all seasons (half worn) on Mustang GT's are not magic on ICE. Went out on 540 and 40 around 12:15 (noon). Crazy drivers  . When the rear end kicked sideways on the grade approaching Harrison Ave while driving VERY Gently at about 40 mph I decided to return home . . . while I could. Slipped and skidded any place traffic had packed the snow into ice.

I put my Dunlop Graspics on the other Mustang GT last night for a planned need to drive into Raleigh today :(

I might be the only dunce in Raleigh with real snow tires, but the Blizzaks on the Miata are really a treat. Put them on the Miata Wed night kinda anticipating a mess.
Saw an interesting article the other day about electronic traction control systems. Statistics are starting to show that traction control equipped cars have fewer accidents ... something that *did not* happen with ABS equipped cars.
While the folks on this list understand front vs. rear wheel drive and tire choices we're sorta in the minority. The return to vehicles being equipped with rear wheel drive and summer performance tires will make snow in Raleigh even more interesting ...

The 4 year old Goodyear RS-As on the Focus did fine. However I went through ES King Village to avoid the Hillsboro St parking lot. I touched a curb and skinned up a wheel when the Wolfline bus going the other way slide into my lane. (Damn the bus looked big) It took me 90 min. to go two blocks on New Bern Ave. I finally got home by going through the 'hood on Oakwood St. (Yes the dealers were still out on the corners) 9.5 miles in 4 hours. :)

I drove home from North Capital Blvd area (new mall) to Cameron Village in one hour at 4-5pm and was ecstatic to make "good time". I did however involve cutting through Brentwood (big hills).

The R did ok I guess. The tires are actually worse than Azenis which came as a surprise being Yoko Es 100's. My main fear was not making it up hills or doing an unexpected slide into a curb or telephone pole.

I get to do the journey all over again in about 45 minutes! Why the hell do I have to work considering I'm running a SUMMER backyard playground store...?

BTW, my wife has snow tires on her Impreza and that thing drives sweeeet. Snow tires definately kick ass.

A guy I work with just made it in from N Durham. He was in Richmond yesterday, same mess as here.
He did have a good story ....

A guy pulls up next to him at a traffic light in Richmond on an uphill grade. The guy has an actual set of tire chains installed on the rear wheels. Driving a Civic.
Oh well ,,,,

I work for a mobile glass service. The owners are nervous when one snowflake falls. So they called 10 min after I would normally leave for work to say that we would be closed today and maybe tomorrow. I guess I will have to time to work on a 12 step program.

Years ago whe I worked for Pizza Transit Authority one of the shop managers bought and installed tire chains on the store's Honda civic. She put them on the front wheels which worked until the first street corner turned.
