Hi folks, I guess mostly the Durham folks for starters...

I find myself wondering what to do when I need to get rid of something large. I have a gas grill, an old console television, and an old storm door that I need to get rid of.

I know about calling Vietnam Vets to come get stuff people might actually want, but what about busted stuff? Any ideas?

Drive it out to the dump and pay a few bucks to throw it in a dumpster.

For a "truckload" it's $14, or you pay by the pound and it will be $4 or 5. They make you wait in line twice, you have to get before and after weights of the vehicle.

Yep, and if you need to make multiple trips, you can save your receipt from your first trip. It has the weight of your car/truck without all of your crap in it so you don't have to make multiple trips to the scales on the 2nd trip. I think the weight from that first receipt is good for 30 days or so (check with scale operator).

They will probably ask what you have, but if not ask for special instructions on where to put stuff like the TV or other items (paint, etc.) that they may dispose of in a special way.

Or you can take it to one of the FREE drop off areas all over the place.

As long as you don't have a dualie truck or comercial plates its free at several drop off locations. There is one in Apex and one near the airport. I have taken whole motors there without any issues. Did I mention Free?

Karl, you can just call 287-8051 to find out how you should dispose of the TV.
Also, you can check that flyer that comes with your water bills to get the dates for hazardous waste disposal. (This is handled at 1900 E Club Blvd, about 1/4 mile west of the dump entrance. Upcoming dates are Jan 8, 22,29, Feb 5,12,19,26 .... 9 AM to 3 PM)

Does the Wake county free drop off locations do any kind of check to make sure you are a Wake county resident?

Wake Co. sites have never checked my ID or anything. The site I used to go to did not even look at my car tags.

Talk to me about this license plate thing. I've got weighted tags on the X. Is someone going to throw a fit?

Thanks for the info all.

I doubt it. You can even take trailers in there as long as they are single axle.

I dunno about Durham county, but Wake has several "convenience centers" that will take all that trash. I have NEVER been asked for ID or proof that I live in Wake county. I have taken TVs, appliances, lawnmower, all kinds of crap. I have also pulled up with the dual-axle trailer and was never given a second glance.

I use the one on Aviation Pkwy a few miles south of I-40. Just go there:

And like Adam says - Free is good.

Karl,

I have taken all manner of busted stuff to the Durham County disposal site at 55 and Alexander (just south of 55 & 54). Rarely get asked for ID, and they take just about anything (including tires and used motor oil).
