Hey guys. Listen, I know this is a long shot, but does the black STI at CarMax (emp. parking) belong to anyone in the club/affiliates? The reason I ask is that I may get a purchasing job there in the near future and any CarMax info (positive of course 8) would be helpful.

thanks!
Matt

I don't know what you mean by "Car Max Info" but I bought my truck at Carmax. I was extremely pleased with how I was treated and the truck was basically perfect. Very positive experience.

i've taken 4 cars there in the past 6 years and they lowballed me on everyone...the worst was my 99 vw gti...they offered me 5k  it took me a month, but i ended up selling it for $12k.

Carmax sux

If you don't have the 15 mins to look up the actual cost of a car and buy according to that. Then yeah Carmax is great with their no hassale price.

Bottom line you can always get a better deal on the same car anywhere. And lord help you if you try to trade in or sell them your car. Just as Chris mentioned above.

I bought my CSVT for less than the average resale according to both KBB and NADA. YMMV, OK?

Their offer may depend on current local inventory. If they have a ton of GTI's that aren't moving, they'll make you an offer, but it won't be a good one. If they have ppl looking for that car and can't meet the demand, they'll pay more.

Yeah but its a Contour

Even Ford abandoned those cars. Hell probably anyplace was giving those things away, or paying people to take them :moon:

You choose who to believe.:
1) The guy who is rude and insults a member's car.
2) The person who reasonably suggests that a place can provide both positive and negative experiences.

I've heard this scenario many times over on Honda-Tech, "Dude CarMax offered me $7000 for my '00 Type R, WTF!" Culprit=Capitalism

Sounds like a great place to work!

I think all purchasers begin appraising vehicles so that will go over well by telling people what their cars are (aren't) worth. Sounds like a lucrative position though once the appraising portion is complete.

You guys making sweeping generalizations about the place must be flat out ignoring some of the other stuff in this thread.

Buddy at work recently traded in a 96 twin turbo Z. He got KBB private part retail for the car...and it needed about $3K worth of work.

I bought my Excursion for what was at the time slightly below market value and there is nothing wrong with it. It was as-new. The price was fair and they made everything very easy. I know this. I was there for the whole thing.

I too have heard horror stories about the trade-ins, but as always, YMMV.

Don't know if this is the kind of information your looking for, and my experience certainly doesn't jive with most people's experiences at Carmax. But I guess you if catch the place at the right time, maybe when Jupiter and Mercury are aligned in the solar system. You don't get screwed too badly. I sold a car to Carmax this year for more than I could sell if for on the open market after four months of trying. So, I was quite happy, of course some of the asking prices they had on the cars made me chuckle with disbelief, and my conversation with the salesman during the test drive of the Miata, regarding asking prices, and "no haggle," pricing was quite funny. The salesman basically told me that buying a car from an individual was a much better proposition for me than buying a car from Carmax. I appreciated his honesty.

I totally agree. A few months ago, I thought it was just another used car conglamerate but they are defffffinately proud of their vehicles. After "test driving" a 350Z Touring Edition (whooooo!) with 3.1K I see the quality in the cars they select. For starters, half the cars have squat for mileage and are almost mint. But everyone's right, the prices are more than a private party unless you stumble upon a good price like Karl. Come to think of it, the 350 wasn't that outrageously priced at $25.9

YMMV.

i don't know about everyone else, but i'm basing my opinions based on my experiences.'

i should also add that my dad sold his Honda S2000 there for a reasonable price. i totally understand that they have to buy a car for less than what they can sell it for, cause that's how they make $$$, but when they offer you 40% of the going market rate, that's a lowball offer in anyone's book.

btw, what is YMMV??????

I think the main thing with Carmax is that they aren't going to give you a good price for a car that they can't put right back out on their lot and sell. Since they like to sell late model, low mileage, clean cars, that is what they like to buy. The car I sold them was mint, with very very low mileage, it also happened to be a Neon, and nobody ever even came to look at it, if they had, they would have bought it, but after four months of trying to sell it, noone ever even looked at it. Carmax gave me KBB private party value for it, right at what I had been asking for the car. Needless to say, my decision was easy. I would buy a car at Carmax also, if I weren't a car guy. Their prices for the most part aren't any worse than any other used car lot, and they generally have kick ass selection of low mileage, clean cars.
