Rather than pull a cable line into a new room (that involves getting in the attic with fiberglass insulation) I popped an Airport card into the machine (G4-500, AGP craphics) and I'm connecting via a Linksys Wireless hub/router thing (also use Sally's Windows XP Laptop sometimes).

So, what do I need to do on the Mac side to make sure things are secure (firewall configuration, etc).

I'm running OSX (10.3.5).

Extra credit if you can tell me how to share the attached USB printer with the Windows laptop (that appears it might be possible in some way/shape/form).

Free beer (your choice, within reason) if you want to come by and show me in person.

So far I've seen no slowdown with the wireless card vs a direct connection to the router.

System Preferences>Sharing then click on the Firewall tab. Press Start.
Open whatever you want available.

If you want to seal off the wireless network there's a couple of levels you can go through. I think Linksys uses a Java-based browser app for making adjustments, right?

1. Don't use DHCP, manually assign IP addies to the hardware you want to connect. No one else will be able to connect.

2. Go one step further and only allow the Linksys to accept connections from the wireless card specific MAC address from each machine.

3. Activate 128-bit WEP will not only encypt connection to your wireless router but will encrypt the transmission of the data while it's. . . umm. . . airborne. This might slow you down a bit. You can decide if it's worth it.

Hope it helps.

Maybe an ITR in DS.
Or half-assed STX prepped 330.

Hey Scott,

I've got some experience in that area. I have some time on Saturday morning if you want.
