The '00 celica has been a bit off squirrley lately, tramlining a bit on uneven roads and more than average wheel spin in damp conditiions.

Turns out it's due for new tires, the best one is about 1/32 off the wear bars.

So what's the irony, you ask?

The car is due for inspection this month and I suspect I'll be putting the autocross tires on it in order to pass inspection (Azenis, with 2 event son them).

Anyone know of some decent 205/50-16 or 205/55-16 tires that can be had for about $50 each? Those OEM WRX tires are looking pretty good.

I think that the Kumho 712's we use for street tires were ~ 65.00 each.
On our second set, we get ~ 30K /set with the AX alignment. OOps that's in 205 15.

Scott,

Pep Boys Futura LTE 70,000 mile 205/55R16. $56 in Sunday's paper.

They will never wear out . . . you will probably crash the car first if you use them. :D

I just put some oem wrx tires on my matrix and it rides pretty nice. I would recommend it.

712's sux, don't know how anyone can like those bricks.

The 711 are a much better tire I think, and cheaper too. With none of that all weather stuff either.

As for the inspection, PM me and I can help you out with that if need be.

Me, me!! (Raises hand)

While not good in cold (ice/snow) conditions, they are an excellent tire in my opinion. I have heard negative comments on the larger sizes (balancing issues?), but for smaller cars, I see no problems with them.

Before I switched to Azenis, I autocrossed a set for an entire season and the worked fine for me.

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

Well, I had them on the Impala SS and loved them. Also put them on my friend's S2000 and so far so good. For the price they are hard to beat.

They are loud and don't grip that well is one of the reason's I don't like them. Yes for the $$ they are the most grippy tire you can get, but that isn't saying much.

They are cheap which is what make's alot of people like them. You can overlook a lot of things when you aren't spending very much money.

I definitely wouldn't AX on them! I have plenty of choices in performance tires for AX sitting at home (obviously) but I need a decent wearing all weather tire for the street. We average 30K a year with sometimes radical alignments and don't want to buy more than 1 set/yr, or pay a high price for what I consider "racing expendables".
The 712s are a bit noisy, but not near as bad as most of the "high performance" summer tires, and quieter than my exhaust. I did have a balance issue after ~ 6 months with our present set but not with the first set.
YMMV
