I figured I could get the plug and receptacle at Lowes ... I thought about recessing it in the floor similiar to the 12 Gauge Garage guy.

I was going to say Lowes usually stocks L5/L6 twist locks. If you ask really nice, you can have the one (two?) laying on a table in my lab at work. (I told the electrician NOT to cut those, but of course the moron disconnected them and left 'em under the floor. I do have 208V gear.) Complete with flex conduit, wire, and box! (maybe L6-30, I'll have to go look. the breaker is either 15 or 30)

Inset is far too much work.

Yeah its a pipe dream. as long as family care will straddle it I'll never get around to it.

Last time I went looking they didn't carry L6-20P, only L6-30P. It's a super common size for data centers though and they are easy to find online.

I think this was the hardest part! I had inadvertently used my office address as the shipping address. HF wouldn't let me change the address, said I would have to cancel and reorder. I tried to reorder but they would no longer accept the 25% coupon so told them to send it on. The freight company (Wicker Services out of Greensboro) on the other hand was great to work with. Happy to change the address, paid and extra 75 to get a truck with a lift gate. The driver called me about 45 minutes away and said the crate was to long for the lift gate and it would be easier to use a truck. To slide it on to. When he got there I talked him into at l least trying to just drop it on the street and I would do my best to get it in the garage.

I pulled out three jacks to help move it and he got excited that I was willing to help so he said he was going to do one better and get it in the garage. I guess it took an hour of working with it. The crate is crap and kept falling apart. Using his pallet jack and my jacks we finally got it in!

Ok, you guys might as well be speaking a foreign language. Since my dad tried to teach be about electricity when I was 12 (but he apparently did not know the first rule to shut of the breaker) and I got shocked I have stayed away from electricity.

BUT, is this logical? My electric water heater is in the garage. Straight wired to the breaker. Can I take that wire, make an outlet box with that and a plug to the hot water heater and then when I want to use .the lift I will just unplug the hotwater heater momentarily?

Some may call this lazy as opposed to pulling another wire, I call it efficient

Is there an empty slot in your panel for a new breaker? If so it's pretty easy to add one, add a surface mount outlet box, some conduit (if needed) and you'd be good to go.

If you are worried about working with electricity there are people who will help you. I think they are called "electricians". Anyway, it's not rocket science. I wired my entire shop, and I'm not even a college boy like you. :)

I take it as a personal failing in my life if I don't do things myself. I did almost loose a hand working on a garage door spring that got me over that for a while.

Did you almost lose a hand or have the spring cut through your wrist so your hand was hanging loose from it........ Just to clarify

I had a vise grip on the shaft (yes I said vise grip on the shaft) to hold the spring in place while I was going to make adjustment to the door. I had put the vice grip with the wrong orientation and the shaft spun and slammed the vise grip around hitting next to may hand . Would have crushed it to pieces. I got down of the ladder and called overhead door.

You CAN, but there's a reason it's hardwired. Building. Code. A water heater can pull enough current to melt a remotely marginal plug.
