So a few weeks ago someone pulled out in front of me while driving our Cherokee and I T-boned them. I bought the Cherokee about 4 years ago with a salvage title and replaced the front fenders and header panel to make it look respectable. Now it's another total loss, and I'm buying it back. The other driver's insurance company says they have to submit a total loss from to the NC DMV, and that the DMV would issue me a new title.

Won't the new title be the same as my current one? It already says salvage on it or can it say something new to reflect it was salvaged twice?

I'm considering selling it and taking the proceeds plus the insurance payout to buy a nicer Cherokee, but obviously I need to be sure the title is squared away first.

There's no way to show that the car has been totalled twice on the title, it'll still just show "Salvage" on the title. Not sure if the insurance company needs to do something with the title as part of their claim process, but it's possible.

Might want to explain to them that it's already a salvage title, and see what they say has to be done.

I've never seen this scenario, but it wouldn't surprise me that you would have to have the title branded again. The claims dept might have to do it for their internal processes in order to sell you back the salvage.

Thanks for the info. I'll hold tight and see what happens. Right now I'm leaning towards just driving it as is unless the right Cherokee comes along. The nice thing about these vehicles is they last a long time and many buyers are not too concerned about a little cosmetic damage. It doesn't take much damage to total them out though.

The one I had was only worth like 1500 bucks KBB since it was a Sport and 2wd. A dented fender would have totaled it out lol.

Surprisingly enough, the 2000 Grand cherokee Limited V8 I have now is only worth 3k or so KBB, and it's pretty much a fully loaded model with all the bells and whistles, and 4x4. I'm sure a similar age Cherokee or Wrangler might actually out value it.

A 2000 Cherokee Limited is worth 3k-3.5k according to KBB and I've seen some on Craigslist for that much. I'm just avoiding all 2000 and 2001 models since the heads crack easily unless they have been replaced.

Apparently '96s crack if you run the original fan clutch for 161k miles and constantly overheat it too, lol.

Mine had cracked between the valves on cylinder 6 and didn't mix oil and coolant.

Heads from ebay are cheap though, I bought one for $275 or so with a 3 year warranty.
