Sally and I were visiting friends in Chicago over the weekend, and for fun we went by a few dealerships to look at S2000's (we are on again, off again shopping for them).
Saw a nice one at CarMax, 2002 with 4000 miles on it, flawless car, priced pretty reasonablly at $26,000 (high, but fair for the milage). The only drawback was the factory body kit (rear trunk spoiler and front lip).
Went by the Honda dealership to look at a used one that they had on the lot (it was up on one of those big ramps for the world to see).
This one is a 2001 with 35,000 miles, overpriced at $23,000. First thing I happen to notice is that it doesn't have "normal" tires on it. As a matter of fact, they were Bridgestone Blizzaks.
Here we are, in Chicago, looking at a S2000 ROADSTER with snow tires on it. Ding-ding-ding the alarm bells are going off.
Since they were nice enough to have the car parked on an elevated platform, we had easy access to the underside.
I guess the exhaust on the S2K isn't stainless, at least that's what the rust tells me.
The front lower control arms are cast iron pieces, and evidently not finished at the factory, thus they rust excessively when exposed to salt. Same is true for the differential case...
Frightening stuff. Sadly, I bet someone will end up paying asking price for that car. If for some reason I was really desparate for an S2000 I would not have offered a penny over $16,000 and even then I'd need a shower to rinse off the dirty feeling...
