I'm looking for a simple portable GPS nav system that can show me where I am, where I'm going, help plan a route, estimate time, etc. Anyone have any experiences with the non-high-end ones? I'm thinking I'd like to spend in the $250-500 range.

Recommendations? A used Garmin GPS III+ can be found on ebay for less than $200 these days. On the other end of the spectrum appears to be a new Streetpilot III for $529:

Thanks!

Mike there is also one made by Magellan that Hertz has had in thier cars for a while. You can't go wrong with Garmin though. They make some of the best GPS units for aviation.

Well, just yesterday I went to Staples and ordered one for $499 - 12% coupon - $20 coupon = $420. That's a cheap fully functional nav system. Granted, it is the "old model" that's being replaced with the newer touch-screen ones.

I was tempted by the C60 and the Ique, but the great thing about the SP III is that it comes with a complete fully unlocked source map CD. It's an additional $150 for all the other newer units. The SPIII also comes with all the car mounts, cables, etc that are extra on the new ones.

Once I get it I will come back and write a report here. Or ask me at Roebling, which will probably be my first trip with it.

Mike

OK where did you see the coupon? I just looked at the Staples site and couldn't evne pull up a listing for the Garmin Streetpilot III. that's as good a price as I've seen, most are close to $500 with shipping.
Do you recall the expiration of the coupon?

12% off (don't tell them I gave it to you :) ) Says it must be in the store, but they will honor it for orders placed in-store. Expries this week.

$20 off order of $150+ is coupon code #88354. Not sure when the expiration is. There may be $30 coupons out there too.

I'm bad at directions :)

Seriously, though, it will be nice to know at any time what my ETA is. Or if I get hungry for Taco Bell on the way, I can always find out where the closest one is :) That and the fact that I can never remember the exit name/number (Jimmy DeLoach? WTF kind of name is that?)

Considering that I'm driving a 7 year old GM product with 122k miles, I hope the GPS has car parts stores and towing service numbers in it too.
