Thought I'd share my latest creation:

Image

My homemade oiler. The black canister holds a 3oz WD40 can. When you press the top of the canister is sprays out of the red tube, thru the 1/8″ fuel line, thru the 1/8″ aluminum tubing and onto the chain.

Leaving next Friday for a little 3-week ride.

Cash,

Looks great, Have you seen some of the commercial Oilers out there? I think if you want to expand on this, you will have to go to a different type of lube. Most of the oiler setups have some form of constant slow drip onto the chain so its constantly oiled. The idea is a small just enough constant oil as opposed to the traditional spray a bunch on, and then respray after it wears out.

I hope you enjoy your trip. I got back recently from a 10 day trip up to WV and deals gap.

Isn't WD-40 bad for the o-rings in the chain? At least that's what i've heard, a quick search seems to prove otherwise though, especially since most o-ring/x-ring chains appear to be nitrile and not natural rubber.

Most of the commercial oilers seem pretty pricey, Scott has one that's somehow vacuum operated and is about $140, the other higher end ones though are $240ish I think.

It looks like it uses engine vacuum to open the valve so it's not sitting there dripping while the bike is off, pretty cool system and it has a range of 1500 miles between reservoir top offs.

WD is a penetrating oil. Also stands for water displacement or something like that. From what I have seen/read its supposedly goes goes past the o-rings on a chain and cleans out all the lube that's put in from the manufacturer. Once that out of there, there is no amount of spraying oil on it that will replace it. That being said I know multiple people that have gotten full life out of a chain oiling it regulrarly with wd. I usually get far less using MC designated oils but I am horrible at chain maintenace.

I think if you ride long enough and frequent forums enough you see this debate often enough that you just stay out of it and if a person likes using wd-40 you let them. it works well enough.

They are pricy. but if their marketing does not lie, in 1-2 chain changes you will have saved the value of a chain based on the extended usage you get out of them. ive been thinking of adding one since I am horrible about chain maint

Yeah the thing about the drip oilers is: expensive - I have maybe $20 in this thing. And the auto oilers tend to produce lots of buildup over time on the sprockets and under the front sprocket cover that has to be degreased. I like the fact that I can just reach down and give the chain a squirt whenever I feel like it. When the can runs out I can buy another at any Walmart and drop it in.

Like Jason says, you'll find just as many folk argue that WD40 is the best thing ever as you will that say its the worst thing you can use. I figure since I'll be doing 2700 miles of dirt from Mexico to Montana, the WD40 has got to be better than nothing. I fully expect to throw away the brand new chain and tires when I get back.

Here's the route:

It's the Paradox of Rodney's Life(tm). Of course you can't have one, since you'd fit on ANY of them WITH a helmet on!

Seems like making you buy and pre-pay a really high life and disability and long term care insurance policy would be a better strategy for your wife than divorcing you.

She actually took out an AD&D policy during the last time I had a bike.... Sold the bike and she canceled the policy.

Seriously, I have Un/underinsured motorist coverage of 1 million on my bike policy. I figure if someone hits me it is a inexpensive AD&D policy. I recommend this to all my clients. Unfortunately, the dog that hit me was not driving and uninsured motor vehicle!
