So I'm about to buy a car, and the title has the both the husband and wife on it and coordinating all three of us to be present at a notary at the same time is proving difficult. He is considering getting a power of attorney so he can sign for her if all else fails.

Is it possible to have the signatures notarized at separate times/notaries/locations instead? The dmv website is pretty useless.

I don't think so as there's only room for one notary sign off and stamp. I don't see anyway to have 2 notaries perform the same job. DMV is VERY peculiar about having the title filled out correctly, I've had one kicked back. Either the power of attorney or have both parties present is your only option as far as I know.

I agree with Rodney on this, pretty sure it won't work that way.

Thanks for the feedback. We used to put both of our names on titles after we got married, but we realized that was a waste of time after selling our last car.

Forgery is such an ugly word.... but if nobody sees it..................... 8)

Which is basically what the woman at DMV told me the last time I bought a car from out of state.....

Technically no.

However, I sold a car once this way. I was the seller and had my signature notarized and then gave the title to the buyer. I think they aren't big sticklers about having the buyers signature notarized, so long as the sellers is considering there is little incentive for someone to forge the buyers part.

It's the seller(s) getting their names/sigs notarized, not the buyer. Anyway, Chris I don't know if that helps but only the couple whose name is on the title need to be together/present in front of the notary, you don't have to be there for that part if that helps the scheduling situation.

Thanks for the info. I stopped by a DMV plate office this morning and they confirmed this. I let the seller know. I'm not sure if that changes their situation or not.

I'm pretty sure that power of attorney is the only option.

When I sold the last Integra to a friend in Jacksonville, FL we arranged for another friend to drive it down since he was going down to instruct so it worked out.
