TL;DR, so you may have ruled something like this out, but...

Question for you Mercedes fanbois.

I have never had a thing for Mercs, so I wouldn't know where to begin. What's the best bang for the buck for my $13k? Let's assume that the bigger and more powerful the better. And let's stay away from really old (1990's) stuff.

How about an SLK 230 - 350 or whatever? 2 door convert/hardtop I think. Early versions where supercharged (not turbo) 4's. Evolved to V6's as I recall.

Don't know if this link from a search will work but a lot show up within 500 miles for under $15K.

How about one of the Buckley cars, the Chrysler Crossfire. Basically a merc, but it is one of those love it / hate it body styles. I always thought it was a great looking car, but again, one I can't fit in....

You had also mentioned a mustang. You're welcome to come over and drive mine when ever you like. Modest suspension upgrade makes it a decent car to drive and throw around. Crap ton of after market parts and the early ones are coming down now w/ the release of the 2015's. I'd look at an '07 or up since it takes advantage of the stiffer body as a result of the GT500 hitting the market. All of the bodies were the same regardless of model after '07

On the fixer-upper/toy side...I know you said "no motor swaps" because you have one, but humor me...

At the $5k level you can still find a serviceable 914. Something that for not much money you can drive. The targa top sort of satisfies the convertible thing. RWD. Not much torque, but that's the thing you can easily fix with a motor swap later if you want.

And in my opinion, 6 cylinder swapped 914's *are* going to be something you can easily get your money back from later, if not make money on. These cars are going to appreciate.

The nice thing is you can just skip the little sixes and go straight to something like a 3.2 as the weight difference is minimal. You can start with the ghetto 5 lug conversion to get yourself into decent wheels, and later if you do the motor swap you can go a little more whole hog on the 5 lug conversion and not be out much. And they are *easy* cars to work on. And very fun to drive.

Doing that swap yourself and buying your motor "right" (which you know how to do) will keep costs very manageable. And like I said, I think create something you can at the very least get your money back *and* get paid reasonable money for your hours you put into it. Which doesn't happen often with automotive things.

I actually think it's likely hard to loose if you buy a 914 with a decent body at this point. Prices are going nowhere but up, so you are likely to make money if you hold on to it a bit. I clearly have to agree with Donnie as I am mostly doing exactly as he says (3.2 six swap, five lug conversion, etc.). I think everyone is crazy for not wanting one, but I also generally have stopped trying to proselytize unless someone else brings it up first. :D

Devil's advocate... Love or hate styling. Near 2K weight and small size comes with risk of being crushed by just about anything on the road. A/C can be added, but I think it ruins the car. So its not a good "every day" car. Porsche price tag on parts.

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

Go for it. A quick search on autotrader showed a number of these with much less mileage and same or lower price too.

This is dragging on like one of Rodney's car search angst threads. Let's solve it right here and now.

Yeah I found the same. I'm going to go drive the silver car tomorrow but would not consider buying it unless he was willing to knock $3-4k off the price. Will see what it's like to drive a tank.

Let me just warn you ... this may drag on for quite some time. I am actually enjoying driving my (hand-me-down) E46 330i. So I'm in no hurry at all :) No angst though, except when people suggest stupid cars

I drove this one on craigslist today:

Image

I have to say I'm impressed ... The S55 is a lot louder, stiffer, and more responsive than I was expecting. I guess I had set in my head that Mercedes == soft and squishy, but that's not the case here. I didn't get to really beat on it, but the power and responsiveness all seemed to be there. I could tell there was some electronic wizardry going on around the corners with the active rollbars and all. The self-inflating seat bolsters around corners was a trip. Seating position and visibility is nice, and the car felt absolutely well screwed-together. Germans...

I think this car has replaced the 750il on my "gotta own a gigantic expensive overpowered german luxury car" item on my bucket list for the moment.

Now I need to find a good $10k one in black.

PS - I reserve the right to forget all about the Merc and get obsessed with some other car instead at any time lol

Now go read all the articles about electronics problems in early 2000's MBs.
