If you're looking at the Mini Countryman, check out the Fiat 500L Trekking. Friends of ours bought one and love it - tons of room.

My wife is jonesing for a 328d, x-drive sport wagon - 43mpg, all-wheel-drive, wagon!

That would be a new car purchase and I don't have deep pockets like you do to spring for a new ride. I also have to say that 500L really tips the scale for ugly. Saw one at the car show and was completely underwhelmed in regard to the looks. Maybe the "trekking" version presents differently. I like the 500, but much too small for me.

Its shocking how much bigger the 500L is over the regular - 26" longer, wider too. And it has the turbo 4cyl. I agree the normal 500L is rather homely, but the trekking looks much nicer, IMO. A new 500L isn't that far from your $15k budget - the BMW, on the other hand is well beyond my budget too.

How is 26k vs 15k "not too far off of the budget"? You engineers are all the same, close enough is "close enough"

Still sexy enough for me considering it's about 15 years old. Plus you already know how much fun they are to work on.

E30 Tourings are now at the 25 year mark - you could import a nice example in that price range. If you want a BMW wagon, do it right!

You're kidding right? Going to Canada to import a 25 yr old car likely treated like nothing special, so it's lived most of it's life in snow, slush and salt? I love me some e30, but even I'm not that crazy.

You can grey market import a car from anywhere that's 25 years old.

Why would you go to Canada when you can go to Germany?

Trekking starts at $21.4k. Our friends paid well below sticker. Just sayin, as new car prices go, their pretty cheap and the financing is practically free money.

I agree.... one of the best looking bimmers out there. Would love to find a nice example of this car. IF you EVER decide you want to sell this car, put me on the long list of folks that want it.

Instead of headlight eye lashes, you could go with hair around the parking lights to make them look like witches warts - then you would be BA! Somebody's gotta photoshop this.

Honestly, the first red flag for me regarding auto styling is when my wife says "I like it, it's sooo cute!"

At least we agree on one thing. That thing is hideous.

It kind of looks like it feels sorry for itself.

I think your concerns about Subaru headgasket issues may be overblown ;). can you fit in a Legacy wagon?

You will fit in it though. It has plenty of headroom. Your wife will not have to worry about you Axing it - the manual version is slow, I can imagine that it is slower with an automatic. It has a lot of room Bluetooth, nav system and backup cameras.

It is just sooooo ugly. Compared to the 500 it is like the cute girl in High School who gained 250lbs at the 10 year reunion....
