Greetings all....
The local BMW crowd is once again hosting a Street Survival event for young drivers. The event is being held at the Raleigh PD training grounds off of Battle Bridge rd in Raleigh on Sat, March 22nd. I was asked to solicit for volunteers and instructors to help out w/ the event.
So I need to mention this is not a THSCC event, so your volunteer time won't go toward any THSCC events, but I can tell you the student drivers DO appreciate your time and effort to help them, no matter what your role.
Volunteers: You'll rotate from event to event and work a part day or the entire day if you like. We need volunteers to help control traffic and control student entry into the elements, lunch, waivers and so on. Lunch will be provided along w/ a t-shirt
Instructors: So a few things the BMW club is looking for here. You have to be able to relate back to the student, in a supporting nature, IE:, not yelling at them for having their stupid hat on. Have them understand the dynamics of the car and what the car is doing vs what the student is trying to make the car do via their inputs. You'll be going over threshold braking, understeer (push), oversteer (loose), lifting off of the throttle, "opening up" the steering wheel and so on. There will be roughly 6 elements to test the student. Each student will have a classroom and driving session, once in the morning and then again in the afternoon. Typically you'll have 2 students during day. You or the student may ask for another instructor. As an instructor, you need to have done and be able to....
> have performed the instructor role successfully at a previous event
> if no previous instructor role, you must have EITHER 2 years of autocrossing under your belt OR have been signed off as a solo student in a HPDE. You MUST be able to relate back to a teenager with positive feedback during the course of the day.
We will need to have the bus over to the site on Friday, so there is naturally going to be a setup day. So 2 things here. We're going to need help getting the bus to and from the event. We'll also need a few volunteers on Friday for setup. There's a LOT of cones to setup.
If you would like to help, please contact one of the following BMW folks and let them know what your interest is....
Denis Kingberg,
dkingberg@gmail.comStacey Mason,
sbm55@nc.rr.comThis will be either my 5th or 6th event helping out. I can tell you right now you'll go home satisfied knowing you've helped a young driver become a better driver by learning car control and understanding vehicle dynamics.
I'm sure I've left something off, but if you have questions, post up or send either Denis or Stacey an email.
