Where was Kidds Hill Plaza? Was that where the Steak and Ale was?

Yep. There used to be a small strip mall behind the Steak and Ale and at the far end of the lot was a Brendle's (I suppose just knowing what a Brendle's was ages one quite a bit). All of that was closed on Sunday back then of course, so although it wasn't huge, there were some fun courses there which featured a pivot cone and then running all the way back through the course to the beginning. I can't recall his name now 35 years later, but I can't forget his Chevy Monza with a built small block (i.e. considering the Monza stock 305 cubic in V8 had 145hp, it was rare to ever see one with 300+hp) just smoking the tires like crazy off the start and pivot cone. Knowing (sadly) what a Chevy Monza actually is I suppose shows one's age too...

Is it worse to say that I actually owned one? This is the only car that tried to kill me when the hood unlatched and wrapped around the windshield. Don't think that won't get you attention on the way to work....

I wonder how many can say they still have the car they started autocrossing with? I still have my '98 Z-24 and still drive it to work daily.

Ha! Ummmm no. I do still have the car I was autocrossing in '08 and I most likely will still have it in '18, so I consider that progress. :)

Was a Monza worse than the Vega is was derived from?

After the waiting in line during the gas crisis in 1973 I ordered a 74 Vega to replace my 69 Mustang. Too many stories to tell about how bad a decision that was . . . and I only kept the car for about 6 months (my record by far). The only good part was that I used it for a Bob Bondurant school at Sears Point (should have seen what a couple hours of lane changes, etc. did to the full tread front tires) and less than a week later traded it in on a brand new 260Z. That was a GOOD move.

First event was February 1998 at Rocky Mount where this guy who I met on the internet from J-body.org named Vincent Keene talked me into bringing out my Teal Automatic Cavalier to "race". Never mind I had probably 500lbs of stereo stuff in the trunk, had fun, after won my 3rd and final NSPL "World" Championship later in 1998, stripped some of the stereo stuff out and ran a few more in 1999, ruined Vincent's transmission in Laurinburg but he kept talking to me! Joined the club in 2000 where I took the red pill to see just how deep the rabbit hole goes...

According to C&D, no: http://www.caranddriver.com/comparisons/1975-chevrolet-monza-2+2-vs-ford-mustang-ii-archived-comparison -- nothing like being a car nut in 1975

While not directed at me, yes, I do intend to run SSM this year(in between my son's baseball tournaments and daughter's horse shows)! And - I will continue the "static" trend in SSM with the same car I ran my very first AX in at Sanford way back in September of 2002!
See you guys soon. Somewhere.

Did my first AutoX in 1993 in NY and ran with the SCCA up there for 5 yrs. Upon arriving in NC in 1998, I immediately attended the NCRSCCA meeting only to find out they didn't do Autocross. At that meeting I learned about Triad & Tarheel. The next Sunday morning I was headed to a Triad event and found myself behind a Blue Corvette and a White Fiero on Hwy 98. Both cars pulled into a gas station so I pulled in behind them thinking they might be headed to the same place and possibly knew where they were going. I introduced myself and met Neal Harrington & Mike Dishman for the first time. I guess I joined THSCC that same year.

Still a great club and great folks!

Cash

PS: I know you are thinking "Hmmm, he's been doing this 20yrs and still hasn't learned how to drive?"

I'm trying to make it CSP legal eventually. It won't be ready for the start of the season :(

Don't be so hard on yourself Cash. When you ran your Taurus SHO in ESP against Ryan and I in the Talon, you were bringing a butter knife to a gunfight.
