Puzzled?

For Christmas, Pam bought me a 1000 piece puzzle that covers the highlights of Route 66. It's been decades since I've goofed w/ putting one of these together. We started on it last night and it took us hours to find all of the pieces w/ the side edge so we could build the outline. Now what I didn't know is there's rules. I started putting all the pieces on the table face up. Pam looked at me like I was crazy. She said I had to look for the pieces while they were in the box. Really? Whatever makes her happy.... The info on the box says this is a "large piece" puzzle. I swear there's not one piece that's larger than the size of a quarter. I figure by the end of Feb we'll be done with this. I have to admit is kinda fun doing something old school and doesn't involve a on/off switch.

I can't imagine the pain of doing a puzzle without putting all the pieces face up on a table first.

Never heard of the "in the box rule". We dump it all on a table, find edges and typically sort the pieces (i.e. if it has a blue sky, put all of the sky pieces together).

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

Why not just buy the picture... it will be easier and you run less risk of ripping out all your hair from frustration.

My 93 year old mother does puzzles by using groups of pieces taken from the box and seeing if she can find a match. If not they go in another box (typically the cover) until she has tried all of the original pieces. Then repeats. Tries very hard to not look at the picture, especially since the cover is upside down to hold the "discards". She has a lot of spare time to fill.

That's no fun. That's like asking why you spun at an autocross? Wouldn't it be easier to just look in the rear view mirror to see what's back there?
