Getting very tempted by the Droid Maxx. Droid phone just went on sale with the Maxx down to $150 with contract. Plus the specs say the OS is Android 4.4 KitKat which I assume will be via an OTA update soon if not immediately.

There's a list floating outthere somewhere of the phones that will be allowed to upgrade to KittKatt, but from what I've read my 1-year old Droid Razr Maxx is not on that list. That sucks because I have a friend with a 3-year old Samsung phone who was able to update to Jellybean early this year. My wife's 1.5 year old LG Lucid is stuck with the older Ice Cream Sandwich OS. It can't even be updated to Jellybean. :(

Here is the link for the Motorola phones. http://www.motorola.com/us/ANDROID/m-An ... rview.html Yours is stuck with Jelly Bean which isn't exactly a bad thing if the version you have behaves as well as the Gnex version (4.2.2) on my phone.

Verizon is officially pushing OTA KitKat (Android 4.4) updates to the latest Motorola phones now. How much "nicer" it will be than Jelly Bean 4.2.2 on my Gnex is TBD if I do this. I certainly like Jelly Bean.

I know there will be things I miss just like any hardware and OS change. Hopefully the good will outweigh them.

I have confirmed that SoloStorm will work with KitKat. However I may still use the Gnex for SS in the rough/tumble FF environment anyway.

Dick

I currently have a S4. I like it and have had it for at least a year or more. Back pocket will cause it to shut off when sat upon but in high crime areas it can be comfortably carried in the front pocket.

It does wash out some in bright sunlight but not a deal breaker for me.

Thanks for all the input! I decided the overriding priority was very high battery life, followed by close to "pure" Android without rooting.

Purchased a Droid Maxx today. Just like any new computer the first steps include updating the OS (to KitKat), app updates, setting up email accounts, transferring data, installing my other apps, customizing settings, and, of course figuring out the "new" way of doing everything.

So far so good regarding look, feel, performance, etc. but really too early to tell how much "improvement".

Thanks again,

Dick

Progress report: I like the new phone. Only problem so far is that it appears FoxFi (no root) caused the phone to lockup when testing usb tethering. Reset solved the lockup and reinstalled all the Play Store apps and updates. I got practice redoing all my other stuff.

Update: I like the Droid Maxx and this version of KitKat. The screen is "clearly" easier to read with higher brightness than the GNex on automatic. The 1/4 taller and 1/8 wider screen and/or other improvements make the pages significantly easier to read. Everything seems to happen faster (not that the GNex was considered slow afaik). The new camera controls seem easier to use. However, for some reason my bank's mobile app didn't like the checks I tried to deposit last night but the GNex did fine. Battery life is, of course, much better than the GNex, especially since it's extended battery is 2 years old.

Haven't found a way to mute the "Droid" boot up sound.

Another update:

Everything is fine still other than I "assumed" that the OS update that installed immediately was KitKat (Android 4.4.2) even though it said 4.2.2. which my GNex has. The final Droid version of 4.2.2 has many of the KitKat features which is what confused me.

Got KitKat (4.4) this morning. Nothing I don't like and it appears to have some new stuff that I'll will appreciate.

Battery life is clearly better than the GNex but I haven't really used it much away from home.
