Here is what I ended up building. The run is 6x12 and the coop has 6 nesting boxes. To make it easier to clean, the slide out try is accessed through the large door on the end.

I like it Cash. Looks easy to clean which is a main priority, and I am guessing from the re-used siding, it was cheap to build. What kind of chickens are those? They look like a smaller breed. Are they noisy? Do they lay eggs in the winter?

Very easy (and cheap) to build - com'on over and measure it up if you like. I've been thinking about putting wheels on one end so one person can move it.

I'll have to check with my wife on the breeds - we went in together with a bunch of friends and bought 3doz chicks (all hens) of various breeds (some red, black, white, speckled). We raised them for 3 months (because we had the space) then everyone came and got theirs, leaving us with 4. In the pic they are only 3-4mos old, so they are twice that size now. They make very little noise, but then again, the coop is over 300' from our house and you can't see another house from my house.

The first 2yrs we got 3-4eggs/day during the summer and 2/day in winter. Over 4yrs, two have died. This past summer we got 1-2/day with two chicken and this winter we aren't getting any. :( We've had to go back to buying eggs at the store - what a difference. We'll be getting new chicks again in the spring.

As for predators (we live way out in the sticks), we haven't had too much trouble. We've seen fox snooping around, but they haven't gotten in. We've got some pretty serious gnaw marks - I'm guessing from a raccoon or skunk - but again, they must have found an easier meal elsewhere.

Good luck!
Cash

After you put wheels on it you can put in a motor in it and the chickens can drive themselves to their new location, plus Les won't wonder why this thread in in the THSCC forum. LOL

Really nice job, Jordan. Those are some luxury accommodations for just 4 chickens.

Ours just started laying again last week and we are getting 1-2 per day.

There are actually 5 chickens in the photo, but every time they see movement overhead they panic, so one is underneath the 3 in the corner. A friend of mine with chickens told me that we could easily double the number we have now for the coop. I have this bad habit of completing a project then learning how I did it wrong

That coop looks fantastic! Don't worry about not having enough chickens to start...you should probably titrate number of chickens based on egg demand and cost to feed, right?

Edit: is there a barrier under the sand to prevent predators digging under the walls?

Thanks. From what I read, the more space they have in the coop, the more productive they are to a point. The plan is to let them "free range" the back yard during the day and supplement with feed.

I used hardware cloth because the wire is 19 gauge vs. 20 for chicken wire and seems more durable. I ran one continuous section of wire from the top of one wall, all the way underneath, then up the other side. We have fox, raccoon, large hawks, cats, dogs etc. in the neighborhood and chicken is on the menu for all :)
