Besides the price, the other major selling point was SMG transmission - my wife or son can drive it if necessary.

I'm guessing you'll quickly adapt to launching the car just right. Not sure on the E46 if launch control is better than the S6 mode stab and modulate method though...

To be honest, I like SMG in the E46 M3 - it downshifts better than I can heel & toe.

How fast are the shifts? I know that the SMG in the Toyota MR-S is pretty slow (much like the rest of the car, ooooooooh!!).

According to European Car magazine's April '09 test (see link below), the most aggressive sequential mode (#6) does the 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 upshifts in 0.80 seconds total, averaging 0.27 seconds per shift - slightly faster than the fastest manual shift times in the test (at 0.87 seconds total).

My personal experience with driving an SMG E46 M3 at BMW's M School about 10 years ago was that the upshifts felt somewhat faster than I could shift any manual tranny, and the downshifts were significantly faster, thanks mostly to the automatic rev matching, which to me is the biggest benefit of SMG for autocross or track.
