I happen to have some old top gear running in the back ground on netflix while I'm working at home today. They brought up the discussion of which was better, Vanishing Point or Bullitt. I truly am on the fence here, so I'll have to contemplate this one.

Thoughts?

Is there a 3rd option? I didn't really care for either. The Bullitt chase scene was "OK", but the movie was TERRIBLE, IMHO.

I'd pick the later Gone in 60 Seconds over those two any day.

The plot line in Bullitt was weak but there was the chase scene. In Vanishing point it was just Kawalski driving down the road in a drug induced state, which I'm not proud to say I did a lot in my youth as well, but I digress....

Sorry, these are your 2 choices. I'm leaning towards Vanishing Point for the "I just want to drive" point of view. Did and still do a lot of that....

I vote for "Duel". The driver of the evil truck kicks anything Steve McQueen did. :) - AB

I remember seeing Duel on TV when it was first broadcast. Dennis Weaver btw.
I also had a discussion a few years back with a plumber friend who took his wife ( then girlfriend) to see Vanishing Point at a Drive In. He thought the star was Dustin Hoffman. I guess he was paying more attention to his date than the movie. The star was Barry Newman
I think I still will go for Bullitt.

The original Gone in 60 seconds (terrible acting but a great car chase using only one car for the whole film) and Ronin. Now these are car chases!

please. if you're talking "car chase scenes" the blues brothers blows everything else away by a country mile. and it has TWO of them, both epic.

but to answer rodney's question - vanishing point

To be more topical (no offense rodney), what about a comparison of Rush and Grand Prix? I just saw Rush last night, while I would give it a thumbs up I don't think it was as good as Grand Prix. The story was great, and I appreciate the nice boobies, but the racing scenes were very disappointing. Compared with the scenes from Grand Prix you would have thought Grand Prix was shot today and Rush 40 years ago.

I picked Vanishing Point, but I think depends on what drugs your on when you watched it the first time. LOL

I LOVED this movie when I was a kid. I must have watched it 10 times and never owned it on VHS, there was a period of time there in the 80s when it was a very popular Sunday afternoon network airing. Must have shown it every couple months. I watched it again a few years ago, first time in decades, and I must say it actually holds up pretty damn well, it does a masterful job of building tension and the conclusion is simply awesome. You know this was a Steven Spielberg film right? It was his first full length film.

Ronin had a pretty sweet chase scene if I recall...

That was actually what Ron Howard was going for - a movie that looks like it was shot in the 70's I'm torn between them as I like both of them. The "romance" scenes in Gran Prix were a little melodramatic but the racing scenses were great.
