I think I have a winner, since it's available at the library down the road! Sounds like it hits on a couple of themes going on in my life these days. Code Book is available too, so I'll probably grab it as well.

Great recommendations so far, I'm sure I'll be referring to this thread in the future. The Sci Fi stuff I'll save for the beach, I have been enjoying the heck out of reading stories about stuff that actually happened lately.

The "Longitude" book was very interesting as it really shows how politics, personality conflicts, professional competition and backstabbing is not a recent invention. And man, the stuff some people pulled and got away with during that time period (and it was considered acceptable), I do think that the concept of "ethics" might be new!

Another book I just remembered is...

"A Thread Across the Ocean: The Heroic Story of the Transatlantic Cable" by John Steele Gordon

Another good mix of the technology behind the project as well as the drama around the people involved. The entire transatlantic cable project reminds me of something like a Facebook, Apple, or something like that from today. High tech, high finance, big personalities, lots of risk, failures and always pushing the envelope.

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.
