So, my buddy is finally moving from Jeeps with big mud tires and lift kits to something way more practical, fast & fun and wants to come out to a few events this year.

We wants to by a WRX wagon and has his eye on this one: http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/3676691870.html

Any things to look for specifically to help him out as my knowledge of Subies is pretty limited.

TIA,
Matt

The 04 2.0L models should have the fuel line issue resolved but Kevin/Whitney could comment I'm sure.

I'd check the subframe for rust and the LCA bushings. Check the bottom and rear of the head to block interface for signs of a weeping headgasket but it generally only the 2.5L engines that suffer the most with HG issues. You might also have him pull the intake host on the turbo and check that there isn't any play in the turbo rotating assembly. Maintenance records to 1/10th of the degree of Mike's would be desirable as well :). Also, be cautious about the 1->2 shift quality as those synchros are known to be flaky on the early 5MTs.

What he said. Take it to Turbotime for an inspection too.

It looks like a well cared for car with minimal mods which is getting rare. I say go for it, but look for items to negotiate in the inspection. Considering the piss poor maintenance history of my 02 when I got it, they don't have many glaring faults except what James pointed out. Do be sure that it has a good track record of oil changes, that's one thing that I understand can hurt these cars.

Tell him to expect to replace the clutch and struts, unless they've been replaced within the past 20k miles.

I recommend taking it to Janko for an inspection. There's nobody else in the area that I trust.

Thanks guys, that the sort of stuff I was hoping to pass on. I actually told him to take it to Jan & Sebastian for a PPI, plus you can get a few miles on it as somewhat of an extended test drive to see if it shakes out to be a good one.

I am pleased to hear, he may be coming to autocross. Now if I can only corrupt his mind into getting it dirty.
