So I buzzed my head and put on my best Karl Shultz face and started looking at bullitt w/ a discerning eye. I started cleaning up the exterior to get ready for the big AM show in PA. Closer inspection of the car showed a lot of stone chips on the hood and road rash on the fenders. The PO of the car had purchased a Dr. Colorchip kit. I looked at youtube for examples on how to use this stuff. I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised at how well this stuff actually works and how easy it is to use. If I can do it, anyone can....

I started w/ the hood and prepped it first w/ rubbing alcohol as suggested. From there I dabbed on the paint and smeared as videos showed. I waited about 15min and then took the solution and lightly rubbed off the excess. While not perfect, it's a huge improvement over how it looked w/ the chips untreated. If you have the time I can see where you could build up the repairs and have no divots in the paint at all.

Next I got a little braver and tried to fix some of the road rash areas. These were on the front of the rear fenders and the side "scoops". They've taken a beating over the years. Same process but instead of focusing on just the big chips, just smear the paint over the rash area. I've found you have to work fast smearing the paint as it sets up fast. Again, another 15min wait and then wipe it down w/ the solution and voila.... no more road rash.

The bullitt is shaping up nicely, I think Karl would be proud. The only thing I can't fix is those damn bird droppings from earlier this year. I sanded all of them and then buffed, but the etchings came back. I'm afraid to do any more sanding on those spots, so I guess I'll just have to live w/ it. Next we attack the engine bay....

this thread is useless without pics.

I used the Dr Colorchip on the M Roadster and have one for the WRX and the S2000. Like you said it's very easy to use and the results are quite good, probably even better if used by folks with lots of experience.

hummm, guess I should have done some before/after pics. Suffice it to say it looks so much better.

Rodney it sounds like you're several steps ahead of me in this area. I've never been very good at touch up work, and to be honest, I tend to avoid it. Past attempts have always ended up looking worse for me. Way to go diving in like that!

So, without a doubt, this mustang has never looked better. The engine bay is clean but hardly over done. Very conservative on spraying "stuff" on the engine. Looks very clean w/out being shiny. All the Dr Colorchip stuff is complete and I'm impressed w/ the outcome of the touch up paint. Cars been washed, buffed, vacuumed and given a thorough once over. I doubt I'll win any prizes up at the American Muscle show this weekend, but at least it's clean, and for a daily driver, that's all it needs to be....

So I think Karl would have been proud of me from last weekends mustang show. Had a package arrive at the house yesterday from UPS. It was a runner up trophy from the American Muscle show for the 05-09 mustang category. Considering that there was a +1000 mustangs at the show and vast majority were the S197's, I'm VERY pleased to have picked that up. Thanks for the tips Karl, they worked in regard to cleaning up the engine bay.

BTW, did get to meet Chip Foose and have his autograph on a poster and Pam snapped a pic of the 2 of us (will post later). Cool guy and just as personable as he appears on TV.

Pam took some pics up at the show, have to find her camera and download them. Yeah, I was pretty surprised to have received this award. Being runner-up, I'm not sure how deep they ran. I did see they had 2 "place" trophies for each group. This is what I received from AM. Now if I could only get Pam to let me place it on the mantle

But when we've asked for pictures, we weren't asking for pictures of the trophy. We know what trophies look like.

So, I actually didn't get a great shot of the car at the show, but then again you've all seen the green mustang. Here's one you haven't seen....

Tip o' the hat to Chip, very cool guy....

A little late, but...

Here's a good video on engine detailing. He's being a lot more careful than I was in that S2KI article I did a few years ago. My own experience is that with a modern car, as long as you don't do something silly like spray water directly AT something like an alternator, covering stuff up with plastic is unnecessary. But it's a comfort thing for a lot of people. Glad Press and Seal wrap works pretty well.

So, if you're interested, here's a good youtube vid of the AM show. Why am I posting this link, why my cars in it of course, if only for a brief second. I'm at time mark 1:40. I'm the bullitt to the right w/ the smoked signals.
