Damn I've got to get rid of that tune in my Mustang. I only got 20.5 going to and from CMP last month.

Don't you have gears as well? Those are the likely culprit, my current Cobra gets teh shitay highway mileage with the 4.10s

I have 3.55s, and Rodney was getting 25+ even with his 3.73s.

Of course it's not like I drive it everyday. Actually it hasn't moved since October 20th.

The major downside to the SI is the terrible fuel economy. ~22 mpg if you drive like a grandma and ~18-19 mpg if you drive like Matt McGrain (both figures are city driving...maybe 26-27 mpg on highway trips).

Interestingly that is almost precisely the mileage I've experienced with my 4.6L Mustang GTs. What an engineering marvel Honduh has achieved, matching the mileage of a 3200lb 4.6L 260 hp 300 ft-lb V8 Ford in a 2800lb 2.0L 4 banger "economy" car, that's really quite remarkable.

Jeremy, tell your friend to not waste his time and continue enjoying his torque and great tailpipe noises, short shifting these cars helps with mileage a lot and is still fun due to the low end torque.

Oh, and not only did my 4.6L Mustangs get this sort of mileage, so did my C5 Z06, or close at least. Slightly better on the highway frequently hitting 29 mpg, and slightly worse around town. Hell, even the GTO wasn't much worse even weight 3800lbs. Now all of these cars could be forced into poor mileage if you too happy with the right foot, but showing some restraint they are reasonably efficient.

Except for the prelude? My prelude weighed similar, probably more torque, and got 23 city 27-29 highway. I always thought the H22 was superior to the K anyways.

I'm in Agreement with Les though, that mileage is embarrassing. Both my mustangs got 20mpg commuting, and that was on 87 octane. I got 25-26 on the highway with them.

 at James' comment on fuel. The engine revs to the moon and doesn't sound bad for a Honda. I got about 19 mpg around town shifting around 4k and on the highway with the cruise on coming back from Charlotte I think I cracked 30mpg just once. With a 200hp, high compression engine, you really can't expect much more I guess.

I could drive my '89 mirage to laurinburg, pulling a trailer full of tires, do 8-10 autocross runs, drive back, and average 30-35 actual mpg. That car dyno'd with only 195hp to the wheels and was a heaping pile of crap, but I still miss that thing.
