So, the speed sensor on my Subaru died about a year and a half ago ingniting the CEL. CEL on = no inspection = expired plates.

I haven't worried about it at all until a week or so ago when I got pulled by one of the State's finest on I-540.

So now I need to get it fixed. I also have a couple other niggly things that I just haven't had time to work on.

Who has a good mechanic that is reasonable on price. I know that TurboTime is the local Subaru specialist, but I also remember him being pricey when he did my timing belt.

Thanks in advance.

I'm sure there will be many recommendations, but I'll start of first w/ Happy Japs and Rex Deffenbaugh. Rex has a been a club supporter for MANY years.

http://www.happyjaps.com/

This may even be a simple fix and Kevin knows what to do.

speed sensor is one of the easiest things to fix. what else you got?

And if you must take it to a mechanic, Janko Import Cars!!! They're the only ones in the area that I trust with my cars.

Edit: but if the speed sensor really died, it would be in limp-home mode (I've had this happen to one of my Imprezas years ago) -- is it? (you can tell by trying to rev it over 4krpm)

+1 on Happy Japs. They are fair and reasonable on price and will do only the work that needs to be done or that you ask them to do.

I've used Happy Japs frequently for my Asian cars. Rex does good work.

Happy Japs did stuff on my sentra many times.. Axles and the like mostly. The ac was costly to repair at his place.. So i did without it for 10 years or more. The 280z , the sentra, the subie is the first car i have owned that the ac actually worked. In all honesty, He is very good, and good guy.. He did work on the sentra many times.I believe he used to race subaru 360 too.

Yep, it's been in limp mode for quite a while. My MPG has gotten better since I can't rev over 4k!

You say the sensor is easy? I can't really find a tutorial anywhere. I checked scooby mods but didn't see it there. Any leads on that? Thanks!

The other things are a sloppy shifter (still). You replaced one of the bushings for me and TurboTime did the other (without me asking BTW, the part was just in the car) when they did the timing belt. The radiator needs to be replaced. The top has a small crack in it. I can do that though. Eventually. And I now have what sounds like a right rear wheel bearing going bad. Ugh.

You're allowed one non-emissions related trouble code. (consult the DMV docs.)

Really? I've always been dinged regardless of how many codes the car is throwing.

Look on the right side of the transmission (same side as the dipstick), right on top, sortof below the firewall. You'll see a "plug" with a wire sticking out of it (maybe two wires). It just unscrews, and the new one screws in. Done. You'll probably need to use a large open-ended wrench to turn it.

Sloppy shifter is probably a missing spring (part number 33022GA081) that brings the shift lever to center. My 98 wagon was missing that when I bought it. Installed the spring, and it feels like a normal shifter. It goes on that oddly-shaped washer where the shifter bushings were replaced, and the other end goes on the shift linkage (just look for the little hole).

Radiator is easy. I replaced the one in my 02 WRX wagon in LizTi's apartment parking lot, with just a couple of tools.

Janko replaced one of my rear wheel bearings recently. EASY. Fast. And cheap. Just need to remove the hub and press out the old one, then press in the new one.
