Believe it or not, I have not one but three 1999-2001 AMG E55’s for sale in the price range. Anyone have experiences with them?

Bob Kendrick's wife drives a '09 clk 500. She is getting low 20s for mileage so I would suspect that the E55 would not meet your mileage spec. I would also expect the gadgets on the E55s to start failing at that age.

It's outside of your stated price range, but as my favorite classic car auctioneer, Charlie Ross, would say: "Squeeze out a few more dollars."

Funny, I've been thinking exactly the same thing. So I brought home a 1990 Guzzi for $2300. Air-cooled, shaft-drive, 40+mpg, eighties color scheme with Battlestar Galactica looks - what's not to like? :D

You know I was struggling to get by with only two bikes.

You could drive the truck on rainy days and ride a MC on sunny days.

I've always liked those and test drove a nice black 5-sp one at Leith Acura in Cary. The saleperson told me it was traded in by a guy my age taking the next step into parenthood and needed a more civilized, less sporty car than a turbo Legacy. Then he asked me my reasoning for considering the car and I told him I need a four door to take my newborn son to school in.

Ok, trying another tangent path I have found a couple of S60 T5’s and a S60 R on the local Craigslist. Anyone have experiences with them?

I looked for a C30, but no luck finding one close to the price range I want.

We bought two V70Rs, new, a 2004 and 2005 model (essentially twin to the S60R except wagon). Some may remember me taking the 05 (very dark blue) out to VIR a few times. For a 6spd manual 300hp awd wagon, it was mildly fun to surprise folks out there who never expected a Volvo wagon to breathing down their neck.

These were the most unreliable cars I've ever owned in 38 years of driving. Volvo bought us out of the 2004 since it had so many problems I was going to lemon it with a $8000 bribe to buy a 2005 V70R, so we ended up paying them another $3k or so to get the new 2005 after driving the 2004 for 24k miles. Within the first 800 miles the HVAC on the driver's side failed in the 05. Next was the Haldex AWD electronic "DEM" module that died. Then it was the front drive axle splines developing excessive play by 5k miles, front seat WHIPS system messed up on passenger seat, fuel pump failing stranding the car, rear wheel bearing shot at 12k miles, etc, etc. Probably 5-6 other trips on top of these I can still recall to the dealer within the first 16k miles. All covered under warranty, but my wife was sick of always having to take that car into the shop not to mention being stranded on the side of the road in her "new" car. I sold it 11 months later and said goodbye to Volvo R cars forever. (we still have the 1996 850R we bought new, now at 170k miles, which has been vastly more reliable than those two new cars ever were). STAY AWAY from all the S60R/V70R cars.

A legacy subaru is probably safer than most american cars.. The company currently is supposedly a top pick for highway safety. If it has four doors, awd abs, all those features.. the fact that it is fast should say dont drive like a looney, but at the same time get something that can get out of its own way. Our old audi 5000s diesel was big and safe and roomy, but was so slow it was almost comical. (ask my father about rockingham in it) . My wrx is sporty yes, but it also has plenty of space for two car seats, it may not be a wagon body true, but those are avaliable.. My neighbor has a legacy wagon with the four pot adn the automatic, and are very happy with it. reliable, semi efficient, awd ability, just dont speed. prefect car. They have a 3 or 4 year old walking around now, and a very young one.. They also have a cherokee for hauling things.. just get a legacy with the H6 and be happy .Dont be like the soccer moms who get a HUGE suv to haul around something that a medium wagon would do fine with, you wil save money in the long run. I grew up with mg and lincoln and such. True opposites, one enormous, one rather small. It said to me, one medium sized car, and one with four doors and four seats will do fine.Legacy or a older 325 or 328 will fit perfectly.

Time for another 180 degree turn...

Passed one of these at lunch today and remembered the one from my teens. I think this could be a cheap, fun, yet economical via mileage.

Mine was bullet proof with the 2tc-g in it. Problem would be to find one.

The 2T-G motors are getting very scarce. The last one I saw was one Bob Kendrick had transplanted into a MG Midget after doing a 2 Liter conversion on it. That Midget was scary fast.
